• FidoNet Setup

From TALIADON@21:3/138 to All on Tuesday, March 02, 2021 19:13:07
    Hi All,

Can someone please give me a little advice regarding the acquisition of a FidoNet address?

I have set my system up for fido netmail (via the Agency HUB 3:770/1), so I assume I have the prerequisites to make an application.

I've been advised that I should add the address 2:250/9999 (for UK) and send
an application from this node to 2:250/0 via netmail.

My question is, if my address is set to 2:250/9999 and my only fido node is
the Agency HUB 3:770/1, will the mail get routed correctly (node is set to route 1:* 2:* 3:* 4:*)?

This is all getting a little confusing.

    Best Regards

I believe it was me who advised that as you are in the UK, you need to apply in Zone 2. Zone 3 covers Aust/NZ and you generally cannot be listed in an area in which you do not reside.

I'm not sure who advised you to host-route through 3:770/1. The proper procedure is to send Crash (direct) Netmail from your system to 2:250/0. This demonstrates that you have a correctly-configured mailer online that can exchange Netmail.

In addition, I believe your email is bouncing mine and ZC2's replies.

If you are in the UK then yes, you can send your info this way.

Ultimately you will likely be connecting directly to your NC and getting netmail from there directly.

When you send your app it would be a good idea to include your email address so you can communicate while your node is being setup and once that is done you'll be good to go.

Once you have a node setup you can connect with the node or nodes of your choosing to send/recieve mail and files.

It was the SysOp for NET 3 (Deon George).

This was done whilst I was following Paul Hayton's Mystic tutorials on
YouTube. Perhaps I misunderstood some of the material, but don't I need at least one hub in order to send Netmail: 3:770/1 is the only HUB I have the credentials for (via the tutorial)?

In addition, I believe your email is bouncing mine and ZC2's replies.

That doesn't sound good; can you advised as to a cause/remedy?

Unlike many SysOps, I'm relatively new to the BBS scene (I have never been a SysOp before), so perhaps I'm missing part of the big picture?

I've looked for as much info as I can, but as you can appreciate, it's all a little thin on the ground these days.

Any advice/comment is always greatly appreciated.

You should obtain the most recent Fidonet Nodelist, find the appropriate Region and Net, then send a Crash/direct Netmail to the appropriate NC. After you are assigned an address, you are generally free to choose whatever Hub you want. You could use 3:770/1 provided that Netmail is routed correctly; usually what I suggest is that you have a connection with your NC.

In addition, I believe your email is bouncing mine and ZC2's replies.

I'd have to look at my Exchange server log but if I recall it was because a connection could not be established... either incorrect MX records for your domain or your email system is refusing connection for some reason.

Any advice/comment is always greatly appreciated.

    No problem :)
