    What's the best series of Monty Python's Flying Circus? 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Is there a general conscensus among fans?

Of course there is no consensus.
You are a stupid english kenigget and your grandmother drinks elderberry
    wine.
I fart in your general direction. Now go away while I insult you some more.

Good, then it was a simple question!

But how can this be the case?

There is a general consensus over which two of the four films, and which two rocked, anyone with a basic knowledge of Monty Python knows that.
So it is ridiculous of you to think that there wouldn't be general agreement over which series sucked more or less than others.
If you don't know the answer, what did you post for?

Wow, such hostility. I guess you caught someone on a bad day.

To answer your question, I have never heard of a consensus among fans
about a "best" series. I don't think I've ever really seen it debated
aside from many fans feeling that the fourth series suffered due to the
absence of John Cleese. It may be because fans tend to think of the
collective series as one element within a body of works -- TV show,
Holy Grain movie, Life of Brian movie, stage shows, etc.

I don't understand the hostility either. I thought it would be quite a
simple question about Monty Python. I didn't expect a kind of Spanish inquisition!

I'm watching the series from start to finish, and I'm liking series 2 much better than series one. And the studio audience seems to be much more "in"
    on the whole show.
I should be up to series 3 in the next couple of days, and i can't wait to
see if there's a noticeable "Jumping the Shark" point before series 4
    starts.

I love the job interview sketch... 5! 4! 3! 2! 1! zero... goodniiiiightdingdingding. I've had a few job interviews just like that!

Also i just found the 1948 Four Yorkshiremen "Luxury!" sketch in it's most original form.

    Thanks for the reply.

One of the old Python books explained that in the beginning, audiences
didn't know *what* to think of the show, so the response was usually
    stunned silence.

Good, keep us posted. The Job Interview sketch is one of my favorites
    as well.

I've made it through to the end of series four.

Series 3 was looking ok to start with, but started going downhill in the second half.
They seemed to be too aware that they were repeating themselves, and tried changing the formula eg. by making single themed shows.
John's absense in S4 wasn't that noticable, but that fact that he wasn't writing probably had more of an effect overall.

I was hoping to see (and hear) more of Terry Gilliam in the forth series,
and it was funny to see him finally get a line or two.
They should have made more on-air use of him earlier.

But it sure was fun watching the whole lot straight through. Flawty Towers next...
