  • Dial-up modem

    I've noticed that folks have been having problems with making a successful dial-up connection (and received an email from Harvey, thanks!), so I tried it myself and sure enough, this GVC crappy internal PCI modem has gone bad (won't make any v.42 connections and even MNP4 is problematic), so I just ordered a $12 external USB modem from Amazon (Rockwell Semi chipset) - so we'll see how that works by this weekend. Yes, some people still call up on occassion for that old-school experience.

    The new ($12 external USB) modem came today and it appears to be working *better* than the internal (GVC PCI): I can at least make a connection from a remote system, but the best rate I've been able to achieve was 28800/21600, rather than the 33600/33600 that I would expect. Please let me know your experiences with the new modem and I'll be keeping an eye on the logs. It might
    be time to bring an old-fashioned USR external modem out of retirement.

    The driver for this USB modem is causing my system to lockup, so I'm not going to be using it. I'll be switching to an old-fashioned RS-232 external modem this week.

    "Upgraded" to an old USRobotics 56K external Sportster (and applied a firmware upgrade to get V.92 support). I still haven't been able to get better than a 21600/26400 connection from my test line/modem, but at least it doesn't interfere with my system's operation like that USB modem was. Maybe you'll have
    better luck with the connection rates. Let me know!

    When I moved last December, I never re-attached the dial-up modem and I only received I think one email from a user that noticed. Anyway, to reduce wasteful spending, I've cancelled the phone line finally and have no plans to bring it back. Vertrauen is now (again) a TCP/IP-only BBS.
