Do you have an external router device (e.g. cable or DSL "modem" with router functionality)? Perhaps it has a firewall built-in and is blocking these ports. Or it could be your ISP blocking those incoming ports.

    Yes, I do.

In a privious message I posted some screen captures links.

It's looking more and more like the ISP has some ports closed. This is
    a new developement.

But if that's so, why do the links work for me?

http://bnb.synchro.net and bnb.dtdns.net both work fine here...

I sent Charter a message asking if the BBS ports are indeed closed and
if so, would they open them.

I talked to a rep sometime ago about this same topic. We found the
problem lay else where and no ports were closed. But that was then and
    this is now.

If I learn anything, I will post more here.

If "for me" means, from the same computer or from another computer on your local network, the answer should be obvious: because your ISP isn't involved in your local network.

I'm not sure where exactly "here" is.

From the same machine as the BBS sits on.

But doesn't the page call have to go out to a DNS machine and then back
to me? Unless there is a HOSTS file, that is. (There isn't one)

If I were using localhost as an address, I wouldn't expect it to even
need to be connected to the internet at all. (But that's not the case
    either)

Clearly something is at work here that I don't fully understand.

Yes, but all that does is resolve the hostname to an IP address. Your browser will then connect to port 80 on that IP address, which is the same computer the server is on, so the ISP isn't involved.

If I were using localhost as an address, I wouldn't expect it to even
need to be connected to the internet at all. (But that's not the case
    either)

Clearly something is at work here that I don't fully understand.

Your ISP isn't blocking outbound DNS requests. That much is clear. But has nothing to do with whether or not they're blocking inbound port 80 requests.

Have you tried use non-standard ports then? Try setting up for port
    8080 or something.

My router, for example, (Asante something) doesn't support it or port
ranges for that matter. Maybe its time to look at something else. :)

Yeah nmap is a lot better. Need cygwin or something to run it on a winbox
tho. Might i suggest X-Scan? Creates a lot of noise if you're out looking for sploits, but good if you're checking yourself or a friends security.

Thanks, but I got the sad news already.

Have you tried use non-standard ports then? Try setting up for port
    8080 or something.

As a matter of fact, I grabbed a copy of TinyWeb and tried 8080... no
    go.

It all used to work. Charter (My ISP) has changed something recently.

My router, for example, (Asante something) doesn't support it or port ranges for that matter. Maybe its time to look at something else. :)

http://www.grc.com has web-based scan tools also. Maybe they left

Yeah nmap is a lot better. Need cygwin or something to run it on a winbox tho. Might i suggest X-Scan? Creates a lot of noise if you're out looking fo sploits, but good if you're checking yourself or a friends security.

thanks! sounds like something i'd like to run on myself and my friends, to check for holes.

If it's dsl, go to another provider, maybe a business account, even qwest
isn't that bad on dsl pricing for business...

If you're stuck with cable, may or may not be worth a business class account that doesn't block ports (usually get static ips as well)

    Little doubt left.

But how is it that the http works for me? I mean bnb.synchro.net gets
me the BBS web page, yet the RSS feed doesn't work. Are not both an
http request? I thought as long as I was getting the web page, it ment
    the http port was open.

    Yet results say different.
