Gibraltar is part of the UK. Look it up.

In the early 70s when I lived in England, I had wanted to visit
Gibraltar as a home base for touring Spain by rented auto. I discovered
that, at that time, such travel was impossible because Spain had closed
the border -- because of some dispute they were having with the UK.

There's no state that won't transfer custody to another state. Provincial borders are not bothering anybody that I know of; it's the international borders, and for me, it's the US-Mexico border

What's the problem with the Canadian border? ;-)

None on this side. They may not want US wandering North, however. :)

A banana republic can become a state.
Another country can become a state.

Who is to say how many states the USA can, or cannot, have?

There is no number specified in the US Constitution.

Maybe the USA should simply be one big state.
That way, in order to leave, the state would have
no choice but to secede from itself.

    Hello Gerhard,

I can drive from the north of Finland to Gibraltar, cross 7 or 8 >GS>>WD>countries/borders without having to show any documentation

You'd better do that soon, Gibraltar is part of her majesty's Brexit.

Just so you know, that is already the case as the UK has never been a >WD>Schengen country.
So when I drive from Finland 'to' Gibraltar I never enter the UK.

I don't know what you're trying to say. You do not enter the UK, because
Gibraltar is not part of the UK, however it is part of the EU due to the
UK's contract and thus will be leaving along with the UK. If you don't have to show your ID now, you surely will have to after the hard Brexit on April the 12th - or whenever the EU decides that we've had enough of what seems
to be the longest Monty Python sketch ever.

Oh, Brexit is just the start. The start of a new end.

First, the UK portion of England/Wales/Scotland/N. Ireland
    separates itself from the EU.

Then, Ireland does away with N. Ireland by declaring N. Ireland
part of Ireland, which remains part of the EU.

Then, Scotland removes itself from the UK, thus returning to the EU.

Then, Wales removes itself from the UK, thus returning to the EU.

Then, with no more PM ruling over England, all the people
of Merry Ol' England declare "God Save the Queen!"

Congresswoman AOC is in favor of free-range humans; no wall, just
    walk or
drive across national borders freely without the need for a
    passport.

We do that between states in this country. You don't have people
freely coming across the Mediterranean to enter Europe, or from Russia.

Europe as a whole is analogous to the US as a whole, with its member
countries being the equivalent of individual states here

Yes, I have been stopped at the California-border when entering from
    Nevada.
    Car searched, Trailways bus searched.

California calls those customs stations 'agricultural inspection'
stations, that gets them around the Constitutional ban on interfering

Hawaii used to be a territory until it was granted statehood in 1959.
Hawaii was in independent kingdom until the US illegally conquered and

Virginia split itself into two states.

It did not. The western counties of Virginia seceded from that state
and were admitted - contrary to the provisions of the US Constitution 0-
    as a separate, new state.

Texas can split itself into multiple states.
California can split itself into multiple states.

Los Angeles got one of its pet judges to remove that measure - to split California into three states - from the ballot. That measure would
have passed by a wide margin in every part of the state except Los
    Angeles.

States can leave and become an independent state.
This has happened before. And can happen again.

That caused a war that the South lost - despite Mr. Lincoln's claim,
made in an 1848 speech, that states had the right to do exactly what
the South did. Apparently after he got into power he changed his mind.
