That reminds me I got to try getting Echolink going again. The firewall (pfsense) I use now doesn't get along with it. I could put my old "blue box" back on, but I don't trust that brand any more.

EchoLink is a VOIP program for hams only. You can use it to connect repeaters, or person to person, conferences, or links from echolink to RF with a radio that setup with a pc to computer audio interface.
Some people frown on it saying it's not "true radio", but I think if you like using it, it's all good.

software packet radio traversing the internet instead of standard radio waves... it is also rightly know as echolink, IIRC...

deity knows how it is supposed to work and be of assistance to folks in areas that have no power or internet capabilities... especially after some sort of environmental situation (eg: hurricane, earthquake, tsunami) or even during/after some sort of man-made problem (eg: war zone, tianamen square, etc)...

Gosh I haven't used that in years... over here our local branch uses IRLP
    quite a bit.

Thanks for the info...I just downloaded the pgm, installed it and have validated my callsign...coincidence; they gave me a node number that ends
in my first Fido node - almost got the net number right too.

Not sure what 'Ham Tech Net' is... here we use IRLP every
It's a 2 hour next on IRLP and echolink. It started in Canada and the net controller move to Australia and is running it from there now. http://www.hamtechnet.ca

rig is an old Kenwood TS 440S. Got to sort my inverted V so I
I use to have a TS-440S myself. I sold it last winter after I got my Yaesu FT-450 for a good price. Had to drive out to the boonies the day after a blizzard to get it, but it was worth it:) Mostly I work JT65 on HF with some weird wire antennas and a hamstick I have on my apartment balcony.. Not easy doing HF in a hi-rise. the balcony is about 12' by 4', not easy to make it work...

Funny how that happens some times. When I transferfer ownership of one of my father's cars after he died, the new plates were on number less then the old plate, the letter part was different, but the number part went from 533, to 532...

    Good luck with Echolink.

I would say that it's not a substitute for radio but it
can be a convenient supplement when we're in a situation where radio is impractical.

Yes, that is something I've seen many times over in daily life.

    Good luck with Echolink.

Playing with it now with no radio hooked to the PC yet. Not that it needs
    one.
