• Powerline interference with radios?

From Kurt Weiske@1:218/700 to All on Monday, August 07, 2017 08:55:32

I read that powerline ethernet adapters can cause serious interference in some bands, and I've noticed a lot of RF hum on my shortwave radio.

Does anyone here have any experience with SW/HAM radio and powerline adapters to confirm?

    Hi Kurt!

I think modern PLC standards notch out HAM frequencies.
A very quick google search did not find any good reading material ...

A PLC manufacturer wrote this (has to be taken with a grain of salt):
Does powerline interfere with HAM radio signals?

By using OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing), we create different
interleaved channels or carrier frequencies (up to 1155) that can be transmitted on. We can also tune these channels to make sure they don't interfere with other RF signals - like Amateur Ham Radio operators - in effect,
notching out those frequencies from use (effectively using only 917 of the 1155). This reduces overall throughput, but ensures that we don't impact HAM Radio communications.

I assume that faulty/crappy switching power supplies can also lead to that.

Depends on a number of variables. My own experience is that I had little interference when I ran powerline adapters, but there's so many variables each person's experience will be different.
