From Roger Shays@1:322/759 to All on Monday, June 18, 2012 19:27:00
I recently Changed my Tank water I have a 55 gallon tank that is nice and clear , I
let it sit for 24 hours before adding any fish , the Ph Level is at 7.0
I bought several little Freshwater Tropical fish , couple of pineapple Swords ,
    neon
tetras and spotted tetras Also bought 2 mini plecko's All the fish died within 24
hours expect for 1 pleko , the water temp is between 76 and 78 any ideas of what
could possibly be wrong , would it possibly be the filter the current is pretty strong
but I dont think its strong enough ,, prior to that I had 4 fancy tailed goldfish , 3
tiger barbs in the tank and a huge plecko , those lasted a very long time

any suggestions , My wife really likes the colorful Tropical blend rather
    than the Pond blend

    1. did you change some of the water or all of it?

would it possibly be the filter

    2. did you flush the filter?

the current is pretty strong but I dont think its strong enough

    3. how strong is the current now?
    4. why don't you think it is strong enough?
    5. did the new fish come from a tank with a strong current?

All of the water was changed and the rocks and tank were cleaned with cool water then refilled tank , let sit 24 hours with running through the new filters and then brought the ph to 7.0 the only survivor so far is a little pleko about 1 and a half inches long

I'd be interested to know what the water tempature was.

Most hobbyists use tap water to fill their aquarium. Unfortunately tap water contains elements that can be harmful to fish. To remove these harmful elements it is necessary to cycle your water using a biological filtration system. Cycling your water means to have your water go though a biological process called the Nitrogen Cycle. The Nitrogen Cycle establishes bacteria in your water and filtration system that is beneficial to the overall health of your fish. This cycle can take anywhere from two weeks to two months to complete. Once the cycle is complete, the harmful elements of your tap water will have been removed by the bacteria established during the cycle, thus giving you good water quality for keeping fish.

When I had my saltwater tank they stress the most important thing is cycling the tank the proper way. I'm sure freshwater is no different.

    Hope this helps,

so there was absolutely no biological base... hummm... there's more than just water pH and tempurature...

assuming you brought the new fish in all at once in bags, did you acclimitize them to the tank water before actually placing them in the tank? you do this
by opening the bag and removing some of its water which you replace with some from the tank... about 1/3rd to 1/2 cup at a time... you do this with 30 minutes waits between additions...

the above does two things... it gradually exposes the fish to the tank water while also allowing them to get used to the tempurature...

it sounds like it was an extremely "sterile" environment and that may have shocked them... but i've seen ones handled as i describe die and i've seen
them infect an entire tank, too... i handle this by placing new fish in a nursery tank for a week or so before placing them in my main tank(s)...

All the fish were placed in the tank at the same time , I had placed the bag in the water for about 40 minutes before releasing them , the only survivor was the baby pleco who adapted to the tank rather well , Im gonna try buying a bit larger tropical fish and see what happens now , now that the tank has been up and running for a week the water should be pretty good now
wishing myself luck in hopes these ones survive this timne

ok, so you did do some form of acclimitizing...

the water should be good in what way? there's still almost no biologic base... it takes urine and poop to get that going... depending on the tank, this can take weeks and the water will get pretty cloudy... leave it alone! it has to transition... once the transition is complete, it will go clear by itself... i generally use some feeder goldfish for this purpose... they are cheap and i don't care if they survive or not... one can also get some fishing minnows... they are even cheaper... i think $1US for a dozen... my last minnows lived 5 or
6 years before a long power outtage claimed them...

Sounds like a plan i will go out this weekend and get some feeder goldfish and have them in the tank for a couple of weeks to get things going before i buy the tropical fish
this should also help out that little tiny pleco i got in the tank
