It's practically useless, it's so bad (actually, it is XENIX clone).
It'd be fun to have a LINUX one!

I don't recall reading anything about a unix clone type shell...

To whom ever it may concern, if anyone wants to write the BAJA, I made the .ASC's a little while back for this, I'm just not interested in writing the BAJA....

Yes like the DOS shell, and it's up tho whom ever codes the dang thing all I did was make .asc's not the code.....

The *.SRC is included in that "BNIX*" (XENIX Shell for SBBS) file.
Maybe that's a start. There's some invalid BAJA codes in there though (not fit for the latest BAJA). As I said, I fixed most of it, but it stills fails on some commands.

Actually this is a good Idea. At 1 point I had almost 1500 lines of code. I started trimming and moving things around to work more efficiently and managed to cut back to 1000 line. Of course I am a rookie, so I do things t hard way. Then find my self backtracking to make things better.

the important part is not to discribe every single routine, but to start with a general skeleton that has the basic functions and add more to it as it goes along. Then, since you not trying to focus on as large an area, you'll get a better understanding of how the whole thing will work together.

perhaps I'll make my own language up so that I can document the programs
I can just see you sitting at a bus stop talking to yourself in your own language. The picture is priceless.

well, i was thinking mostly of a writen language, but translated to english when spoken.

hmm, well Im guess ing that you'll be up to your eyeballs in code for th couple days then...
I have over 75 hours involved in this so far. And I did not draw the Ansi.

hmm, when I went to do the dyndoom qb to baja I was figuring that I was gonna take all the complex screens and combine them into a data file (similar to
a wad file) and then just grab chunks of the file and send it to the screen to make up the image...

Also I am sure that it will be difficult for me to accually take the time to write the flowchart and document my ideas, but I guess if I want quality then I will need to spend a little extra time on it...

Well I have written 1004 lines of Baja code since Sunday Morning
    Wow! What does it do?!
Well it is for listing Internet resources.
It has functions to add to telnet, web, ftp, and email address listings, as well as read them back to the user. I am working on releaseing version 1 an moving on to adding in all the search, edit, and delete functions. Last wil sysop functions.
Basically is is lind of a bbs list only for the internet.

well I made a script for mIRC that would store info for a ftp site and allow the person to update the entry at needed. they sent all the info for the site
    <ip> <login> <pw> <port>
and then the script stores all this information into a .ini file along with the persons address and nick. The code was only 2kb but it took 2 days to write and debug...

First a couple of pointers. Type your qustions and the code you are discussing seperately. You should enter the code just exactally as you are trying ot use it.
Also, if you are writing a mod just for your bbs then using a full path is ok, but using a global path and directory will work on any standard Sync system regardless of drive letters.

    ##### define string variable for later use #####

    str testdata

    ##### open the file on the hard drive. Create it if it does not exist.
    ###### %j starts us out in the sbbs\data directory #####fopen file1

    o_creat|o_rdwr|o_denynone "%jbajamods\\????\\test.dat"

    ##### now that the file is open you need to read your data from it #####
    ##### the ?? being the length of the data in question. ####

    fread file1 testdata ??

Now if you use print testdata, whatever was in the file is printed. Not knowing what you are doing it is difficult narrowing this down any more.
Also, I know very little Baja, so I am sure there are many versions to this same task.

I don't recall reading anything about a unix clone type shell...

Yes. It's called "BNIX1A.ZIP" and it won't compile with the new BAJA versio However, I diddled with it and fixed that, but there are still problems with some of the features in it. TK should have both the original and my version the TALAMASCA. (Although one of the versions I sent him is not the correct, most up2date one and I don't know which one he has now.)

    It's really a ZENIX clone.

Hey, im the orig-on-all auther of bnix... i'm curios to know if anybodey out there is using it?...

I made it a ZENIX clone because thats the only unix-style system who's boot sequence was easy to emulate in a baja command shell, all emulated screens are taken directly from ZENIX. I found that most poeple found it a bit difficult to use, but i think i included some doctumentation.,

What is the name of the file you updated? id like to take a lookse, If anybodey is interested in it, i'll make a new version for 2.3, leme know!

To be honest, the original synch default screen still frightens me.
It was like brain damaging to new users <G>

When i was first starting out with bbs's, it was a MAJOR acomplishment for me to master the magical wounderment of 'the zmodem

There _used_ to be a UNIX shell. There originally was a DOS shell that someone brought out. Then an old-timer on DOVE-Net (name of Horsepwr if I remember correctly) took the DOS shell as a challenge and produced a UNIX shell. At the time I didn't know one end of UNIX from the other so I never tried it out.

    Hmmm...

    Errr....

The thing about a UNIX sell is that there _are_ no menus. ANSI, ASCII or otherwise. The UNIX command shell looked like this:

    $

unless you logged on as SysOp, in which case it looked like this:

    #

Of course, a UNIX command-shell wouldn't be authentic unless someone wrote a 'vi' editor to use in place of SyncEdit. Which isn't such a crazy idea, after all, since 'vi' was designed to run over a serial connection, and since there must be at least a thousand open-source implementations if 'vi' out there. But I guess some ninny would demand a port of 'emacs' too....

pico might not be so bad a choice, either, and might be a little easier
for those who are curious, but have little to no *nix experience. I
know *I* still avoid vi if at all possible. As to emacs, I only have
this to say. "Get thee behind me, foul demon!" I believe that emacs

how do i use replace_text to replace a "multi-line" text item, such as #694 (NodeLstHdr)

The multi-line format you see in TEXT.DAT is only a notational convenience. #694 is written on three lines but it is actually one string. The backslash immediately following the quoted string indicates that the next line should be concatenated. #694 is actually ONE STRING containing:

    "*n*hNode Status<CR><LF>*c____ ___________....<etc>"

If you want to use REPLACE_TEXT to replace it, construct a string containing all the replacement, and then call REPLACE_TEXT.

(I've butchered my string up there so I could type it, but you figured that out for yourself, right?)

yuppers - i figured it out and will give it a try :) It wasn't quite clear to me that the string was actually being concatinated. I'll let ya know what my experience is (if it doesn't work) hehe

heh, actually its not really like c at all -- more like basic. some of the ways the functions work are similar to c, but aside from that.....

it would be real nice if it wasnt as "procedural" as it is -- user defined functions would be nice, but i don't think i'm going to hold my breath.

I just hope that the next version of SBBS takes the Windows long filenames and stores them in the extended description for any files that are "recieved via ftp"

I just hope that the next version of SBBS takes the Windows long filenames a stores them in the extended description for any files that are "recieved via ftp"

You know that isn't a bad idea... How hard would it be, instead of dong a complete re-write to implement long file names, that you just put the long file name in the extended description? You might be able to make the FTP server recognise this, and then if someone downloads via FTP it will send them the file in long-filename..

Anythoughts Rob? Possible or completely impractical?

heh, actually its not really like c at all -- more like basic. some of the ways the functions work are similar to c, but aside from that.....

it would be real nice if it wasnt as "procedural" as it is -- user defined functions would be nice, but i don't think i'm going to hold my breath.

I just hope that the next version of SBBS takes the Windows long filenames a stores them in the extended description for any files that are "recieved via ftp"

I've already implemented this feature for the next release of the FTP server (but this has nothing to do with Baja). <shrug>

I think what matters in documentation is the degree to which the writer has assumed that the audience has ample prior background knowledge and therefore will start using language short cuts. It's not necessarily and issue of the readers' intelligence. It is simple lack of factual knowledge.

seriously, i don't have a problem with it, i just want to customize. in the end, i dont want my board to look like synchornet (no offense to the job you've done writing it) -- i just hate stock looking boards. There are probably tons of Sync BBS's out there that all look like one another (like the original), and given the fact that most callers dont post anymore (not that these stock sync bbs's have any kind of interesting discussion going on) whats to keep me calling?

You can still mix-match dial-up nodes, so node listing can contain dial-up users as well as telnet users and I suspect at some point I will have "via HTTP" and possibly other node/connection types.

if you do a node activity list it shows up there -- its arguably a very minor issue, but it is redundant (considering dialup is eventually gonna be almost gone). I just like to customize anything and everything i can, of which this is one element -- and the TEXT.DAT file is a great concept INMHO.

yeah, that way you could making it whatever you wanted. i just dont see why any text should have to be hardcoded into the actual program..... doing so only takes away from the power of baja. if its a text string in the text.dat file, it can be replaced to call a baja module and do whatever you want it to do, either display wise or operationally.

was wondering, I am working on a sysop menu in my command shell, and was wondering if there was a way I could bypass the system password prompt when I have it execute a command. I know the system password is there for security reasons, but it gets on my nerves and I really dont need it asking me for a password with each command I execute. If anyone has any knowledge how this can be done please enlighten me, I already know how to make it only allow access to level 90 or higher so this was the last bit of info i needed.

For most commands, yes. Are you using the str_cmds.bin module for your sysop commands? If you remove the "chksyspass" lines, that will remove the system password check for those commands.
