WWIV and WWIVNet Update From The New NC
By Weatherman 1@1
As many know, lots of things have been happening with WWIV BBS and
WWIVnet over the past few years. When Weather Station BBS came back
online as a virtual machine around three years ago, the only networks
that were available were FTN based. About 7-8 months later, I was
approached by Eli Sanford to join WWIVSN (the early beginnings of the
resurrected WWIVnet). Eli spent lots of time helping others and
leading the path so that we could have a functional WWIV network like
years ago.
On a very sad day (October 26, 2015), our WWIVnet leader Eli Sanford
passed from leukemia. We were in shock and upset from the news. A few
weeks went by as we were mourning the loss of Eli and then later,
figuring out plans to keep WWIVnet alive.
We agreed to meet in the WWIV chat room on Monday evening to decide
how to move forward. The first item of business was determining the
new @1 node for WWIVnet. Rushfan suggested myself and the rest of
the group was on-board with that change. I was very humbled by the
votes of support and encouragement. It has been my passion to keep
WWIV and WWIVnet alive in the most resiliant way possible. My hardware
setup is robust for a home environment and offers a good deal
redundancy. I will always do my best to make sure WWIVnet is running
the best way possible.
That same night, we decided to make a historic change for WWIVnet.
We switched the entire network from using WINS (PPP Project) to
NetworkB (BinkP) written by Rushfan. Given the magnatude of changes
that we made that night, I think it went fantastic! We have been
running completely using BinkP for WWIVnet ever since. It has proved
to be a major step forward! I can't thank Rushfan enough for writing
that program, as that was a HUGE step forward!
In more recent news, we now have the ability to send out network
updates using NetUp just like the legacy WWIVnet. WSS provided a
new version of NetUp for WWIVnet which has been working
perfectly sending out network updates, subs listings, and even this
WWIVnet news. This brings us back to the functionality that we had
with the legacy WWIVnet. It has been well over a decade since this was
possible.
I am completely honored to be a part of such an excellent group of
people that have done so much for WWIV and WWIVnet in the past few
years. Highlighting the past few months as just nothing short of
incredible with the move to NetworkB (BinkP). That was as huge of a
change for WWIVnet as when we started moving network packets using
Frank Reid's PPP Project (SMTP).
This has been a very fun road for our hobby and I'm very excited for
what the future holds. I'm sure as more people discover our
milestones, additional people will re-connect and join our fantastic
group. We will also not forget Eli and all the hard work he did to
start the WWIVnet comeback.
Here is a toast to the bright future of WWIV and WWIVnet!

WWIV 5.1 Release Goals
By Rushfan 1@514
Main Themes
~~~~~~~~~~~
Messages and WWIVNet have always been at the heart of WWIV. For 5.1, I
plan on modernizing and improving the internal code quality of the
messaging code, making it easier to embed into new tools. Included in
this will be support for the JAM Message Base format to broaden the
range of tools available for exposing message bases.
More on JAM: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAM_Message_Base_Format
Net38 will be finalized [currently Beta 6] and released supporting any
new changes to get WWIVNet functioning in the Internet era.
See all of the work targeted to Milestone 5.1 on GitHub:
I asked and found out that WWIV will run on the Raspberry Pi, but there are some caveats at the moment. The BBS itself runs fine from what
people have tested, but the network software (for WWIVnet) is still
native DOS.
to be having is sometimes messages from Mystic-based BBSes get
Good to hear! I believe it has its owm tosser, etc, but you still need
a front end app to get the pkt. Is that correct? If so what would you recommend? I use Irex for my WINS setup, it is ok. I like Mystic
because it has it all, binkp front end and toss'es mail and files.
It does have its own tosser and scanner/packer, but you still need something like Internet Rex to transport the mail packets. I am
having that pesky little problem with EZYMAIL (running 2.15g3 of
Ezy right now as that is the only thing I can even get REMOTELY to
run).
What ezymail problem are you having?
I've got SGMail 4.0 somewhere, that's an Internet Mailer, or do you
still need something like Irex to send and receive mail packets?
What ezymail problem are you having?
I was having an issue with it showing up an invalid compression config for 9:0, but fixed that.
The only "issue" I am having right now is that I have to load the
2gbfix TSR before running EZYMail,
otherwise the disk check will fail and not toss any messages.
But, looks like that for right now seems to be a non-issue at the
moment. I was also able to get SGMail 4.0 set up to handle the
incoming calls becase for some reason after dropping SIO2k's VX00.SYS
in favor of BNU, Ezy was not dropping DTR when a user logged off.
SGMail fixes that issue.
Shawn, Ezy is pretty interesting. I got it up and running and
figured out
how to telnet it with Net2BBS/netfoss but when I looked at the
fido setup in
the manual, it sort of freaked me out. I still have it in a
different
directory.
The fido setup is soooo easy in ezy. You basically set the message area
once, and tell it it's echomail and ezycom / ezymail will do it all for ya.:)
The manual is very detailed... I'd ignore it and pretend you're setting up something like Fastecho and RA instead and it will all make sense. ;)else
you do know that that's not really the proper way to do set up message and file areas, don't you? if the mail/file tosser can do it, it is better to let them do it so that areas are created /only/ if there's any traffic in them... why create 100 empty areas when you don't need them at all? this falls in line with not doing an areafix/filefix for "*" or "ALL"...
Too bad most of the BBS shareware authors are long gone, and most of the software is now abandonware.
The author if SIO sadly lost his key generator. And Im hoping D'Bridge 4 can replace Internet Rex pernamently.
There is a crack out there for SIO, and I'm sure the author wouldn't
mind people using that at this point in time.
I registered mine decades ago. Well worth it for that program. I
have used it longer than most any other program around.
There are other alternatives, especially assuming just about everyone
uses BINKP now. What capabilities of IREX are you worried about
losing?
Yes, but a bunch of us have been working on getting re-connected to those MH>people on Facebook and trying to get the source to keep things alive.
We have had a decent amount of success.
That is encouraging. Doug Rhea of bbsfiles.com had been doing similar things. I was lucky enough to register most everything I have on the BBS, before the authors "vanished", or ended support.
ray gwinn already stated, more than once, that it was ok to use the crack >because there can never be any updates made to the software...
i've others that i've used longer but yes, SIO is definitely in that list...
The last time I talked to Ray I told him about Blue Lion and he said that if there was enough interest, he would consider resurrecting SIO or
SIO2K.
Is Blue Lion version 2.2? If so, I am running one of the latest 2.2 betas >over here with SIO with no problems.
Version 2.2 is eComStation. Blue Lion is 100% code licensed from IBM by a company called Arca Noae, which is an IBM Business Partner.
More info is here:
I'm not sure I follow what is going on. So there is another company
doing a different branch of the original OS/2 which is not eComStation?
Blue Lion is the original OS/2 Warp code as IBM had it. IBM sold over
the rights to continue ORIGINAL OS/2 Warp development to one of their Business Partners. So, this is NOT eComStation, but in fact, REAL
OS/2.
eCS started in exactly the same manner... there's no work in certain areas being done as that wasn't licensed... i think the kernel is one of those areas... most everything else, though, can be worked on... i don't knowabout
BL's licensing... they may have gone the extra distance and gotten kernel rights... either way, eCS /is/ OS/2 with slightly newer clothes...
So how did the people updating eCS get the OS? That is the part I'm
not clear on. I do really like what the people updating eCS has done..
OS/2 really lacked networking ability for along time. The latest eCS really helps in that area.
I like what has been done with eComStation. The main things I would work on is the networking. I only use it for the nodes of my BBS. That requires good networking support since all the data now resides on Windows.
Serenity Systems licensed much of the OS from IBM. Blue Lion, from what I understand, paid a lot of money to get access to the video system and kernel, which Microsoft has a lot of code in and doesn't like to share it.
But Serenity has not done anything with the code in quite some time, though.
Shawn, Ezy is pretty interesting. I got it up and running and
figured out how to telnet it with Net2BBS/netfoss but when I looked
at the fido setup in the manual, it sort of freaked me out. I still
have it in a different directory.
The fido setup is soooo easy in ezy. You basically set the message area up once, and tell it it's echomail and ezycom / ezymail will do it all for ya. :)
The manual is very detailed... I'd ignore it and pretend you're setting up something like Fastecho and RA instead and it will all make sense. ;)
Keep playing it works great, is super fast and more stable then anything else I've run (and I ran Maximus / Squish for years!)
