I'm asking again, is there a BBS software for Mac OS (PowerPC) or OS X (Intel).

I have several good Macs, and would like to have one or more of them doing something instead of sitting around idle.

I'm also running Winserver on a mac under OSX... (Yes Wildcat! Winserver on a MAC running the latest OSX through Parallels) it's hard to figure out where windows stops and mac os begins.

I had it installed on a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger some years back. The site does say it must run in "Classic Mode" under OSX, which was supported until Leopard (I think). great package and easy to get networked too.

Hermes runs on System 9... you will need to have an older version of OSX that was able to dual boot into System 9.

2. SMTP in/Out for e-mail
3. Some sort of kill file to delete newsgroup spam. I can adjust my
killfile to anything but need a "Killfile" program

if I have minimum this I should be able to run remoteaccess again... if

for the above tasks you list, i use GIGO and souper... souper pulls the news into .bag files and has its own killfile... the GIGOSMTP package allows for sending and receiving emails... everything then goes through GIGO for conversion to PKTs for fastecho to toss into the message bases... unfortunately
i don't think there's a winwhatever flavor of GIGO or its tools...

Shhhhh... don't date me... RA v0.04 was exciting times... I think I ran versions beyond that. I should be able to unlock the multi-line. I got wooed into other BBS software due to more multilines and etc.

I ran TBBS prior to that and it just kept becoming too much of a money pit... especially for someone who was only a middle school brat and bought it all from cutting grass in the summer and doing whatever. My board did do quite nicely recovering operations funds when I charged for access to the doors and all.

Of all the software that I ever run, I can honestly say RA was the most enjoyable one that I every ran. I was good friends with Steve and John Richardson don't know where they are now... Joho and Andrew came to visit them in Louisville... very nice people.

I know that you have helped me much in the past but your message unlocked that blockage from my TBI... I can't remember a lot of things. I was in Fido much longer than as 1:11/60... don't know the exact dates I started with RA, but my users much preferred TBBS over RA, I much preferred RA over TBBS especially when JAM came out. I think 0.04 was still Hudson only.

Any chance you can make the sofware for UUCP and SMTP available for FREQ? Or FTP. And does Bruce still answer his e-mail?

Thank you millions... not so much for the software advice but for getting the old memory going again. Now is there a form of Killfile for the JAM message base to nuke some of the newsgroup spam. Since Google took it over things have gotten better with spam in the newsgroups but if I ever crossed paths with John Kinal I think it would not be a pretty site. Sorry he lost his mom but his spam is LEGENDARY.

Be advised: the PowerMac G5:s use _a lot_ of power, even when just being idle. They also tend to warm up any room they are placed in. :)

Well, my other choice is a Mac Mini (or Mini Mac, whichever). I bought two of them cause I though they were so neat, and they work great. They are all (G5 and the Minis) are in a storage building in the back yard, with two fans running constantly, None of them have ever overheated (I know, there's always) a first time.

Anyway, I'll see if I can even get it running. On the BIG G5 first, THEN on one of the Minis.

i had a look after i had written my previous message... GIGO and friends are OS/2 but the sources for at least GIGO are available and may be portable to winwhatever... i don't know... there are others available but i do not know them... pcmike (aka mike ehlert at pcmicro) might have some ideas, though...

no, it is best to do that before the messages are posted to the JAM base...

1. tool downloads news and filters the posts by its killfile
2. filtered .bag files are processed by conversion software to PKTs
3. your normal FTN tosser tosses the filtered converted messages to whatever message base format your system uses

Sorry Bill, I don't know what that means. The Bad CPU type doesn't look promising but I am not sure. If you don't get a better answer here you may
get a better answer in the MYSTIC echo from someone who understands that output.

I believe I've heard of people running Synchronet on OS X (probably built from the source code). Others have mentioned Mystic already.

I liked the original design of the Mac Mini before the 2010 re-design. It was easier to open up and upgrade the hard drive, etc., but starting with the 2010 design, I think the only thing that's really easy to upgrade is the RAM. And more
recently, I seem to remember reading somewhere that newer designs of the Mac Mini
will have the RAM soldered in so you can't even upgrade that.

Mystic is for Intel CPUs, and Hermes is for "Classic" OS.

Problem is that the Mac Mini is PowerPC, and I cannot get it to load Mac OS 9.
