• Dial-up and Telnet Synchronet?

From Sean Dennis@1:11/200 to Mike Powell on Sunday, February 27, 2005 14:31:16
    Hello, Mike.

Replying to a message from Mike Powell to All:

There is a fellow sysop who is attempting to set up his BBS, on a
Windows machine, to be available both via Telnet and dial-up.

He needs to get dialuptotelnet.exe, which should be available at http://www.randm.ca.

    Later,
    Sean

There is a fellow sysop who is attempting to set up his BBS, on a Windows machine, to be available both via Telnet and dial-up. Someone pointed
him to Synchronet, and apparently told him that you could set up the DOS
and newer Windows versions on the same machine to accomplish this.

He would like to keep a dial-up node available as he does still have a
few dial-up callers. It would sound like he is attempting to have both versions share the same message and file areas (and probably doors, etc.,
    too).

Portions of his latest e-mail to me are included below. Does anyone have
any pointers for him? Is this possible to do, or is there a better way?

I suggested that he might try installing one version, and set up only one
or two message areas, and then set the other version up in a different directory, or possibly even a different partition, and then attempt
to point the second install to the original message areas, and see if
    that works.

    ===============

After several attempts, I had installed and setup the DOS version of Synchronet for my dial-up and local node...then, thought that I could
install the Windows version over it, for a hybrid system, to add telnet
access. But, when I installed the Windows deal of it, it wiped out all of
the work I had done for the nearly 200 message areas, and over 5500 files.

I haven't yet emptied the Recycle Bin...so, I might be able to uninstall
the Windows deal for now...and restore the DOS stuff. But, I'm basically
back to square one. I still want to go with Dial-Up and Telnet access for
the BBS...but, I'm basically going to need some guidance. The setup with
the Synchronet Configuration program isn't difficult, but it's tedious.
But, there are so few BBS packages that are still supported, that will
offer a combination of both dial-up and telnet access.

If anyone can provide pointers with Synchronet, or another supported BBS package...freeware, or shareware (not too expensive, please)...I would
    greatly appreciate it.

Go to the Synchronet sysop base. Rob is very helpful with this type of stuff. He can tell what files share and what don't

Try 'EzyCom'. I run a dial up node and a Telnet one. Works great!
Netmodem for Telnet seems to do the trick.

Has he also looked at EleBBS?

That's what EleBBS does. So does EleWeb, the web BBS version. It shares the same user base, message base(s) and file transfer areas.

Synchronet will accept both telnet and dial-up callers.

Not normally. This can be done on *nix using getty/mgetty to redirect a dial-up login to a telnet->localhost session. On Win32, you can use Dialup-to-Telnet gateyway (http://www.randm.ca/files/dialup-to-telnet.rar).

Wow, you had me going for a minute when I saw DOS and synchronet in the
same sentence, I was thinking for a second that I could use synchronet
in DOS to telnet into a bbs.... then I realized that synchronet is a BBS hosting program....

Right now I'm calling in here using a DOS machine, I use lsppp packet
driver to connect to my ISP, then msdos kermit 3.16 beta to connect to
fidotel bbs to access this message area...

I started out with DOS and still like to do DOS internet stuff, but this
dos kermit is a rather torturesome adventure, but I'm a glutton for
    punishment sometimes.

works pretty good with sailor though, but can't seem to render a proper
    ANSI screen on many BBS's.

Synchronet will accept both telnet and dial-up callers.

If you run the DOS version to handle the incoming dialup callers, unless something has changed.
