• Binkd tools (TIC, FREQ's...), gating, and setup

From rick christian@1:3634/12 to All on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 09:27:32
While I am waiting for a reply to my (re)join request to get a proper node number... a few questions on set up, or err... fine tuning the setup... things seem to be working good... Thank you ALAN!

    1) Polling of NC/hub???

What kind of cron job have others setup/use for this???? Since in my FD days I
had "metro" service the local calls to my hub/NC were "FREE" so I polled often to get echomail, and routed netmail etc...

I thought having something along the lines of

    binkd -pP1:135/0 -q /home/me/fido/binkd/binkd.cfg

Was good.. BZZT it just whines about being in use already and doesn't poll, and

    binkd -p1:135/0 -q /home/me/fido/binkd/binkd.cfg

Doesn't do a poll if the outbound is empty. :(

    2) TIC processing???

I am leaning towards tinyTic as its related to JAMnntpd and crashmail..

I've looked at the setup hints that I think syncrobbs or something has on their
    site with tinytic....

    others? Setup?

    3) Since Binkd needs to have external help for FREQ's what are others using????
    Setup?

FD dealt with all that mostly.....some of the stuff I was gating in/out via UUCP at the time with GIGO did some things externally...

    4) Gating -

Not entirely binkd related... but since I was GUUCP at the time, and I worked with Jason Fesler on the betas and releases of GIGO I am curious as to what others are doing to gate at minimum netmail < - > email. And had PGH's first ISP provided uucp (Telerama, sadly gone in 2008 :( )

GIGO is dead, Mr. Fesler doesn't seem too interested in getting bothered about it.. the KEY gen form is dead on his site...The gigo-l and gigo echo are gone....the various posts about GIGO and being asked about it are well, rude.

So what are binkd users using for gating???? I've looked at IREX etc.. and they
seem to be tied into a lot of things... that may not be my thing... uucp and fxuccio seemed to be a lot easier then! :) ;)

    Comments, suggestions, welcome..... Thanks.

    Hi Rick!

    20 Sep 2016 09:27, from rick christian -> All:

    1) Polling of NC/hub???
What kind of cron job have others setup/use for this????

    node=$1
    if [ "$1" = "" ]; then node="2:313/41@fidonet"; fi
    if [ "$1" = "xx" ]; then node="xx@fidonet"; fi
    ...
    /usr/local/sbin/binkd -p -P $node /usr/local/etc/binkd.cfg

    2) TIC processing???

I am using htick from the husky/HPT project.

    3) Since Binkd needs to have external help for FREQ's what are others using???? Setup?

    mfreq

    4) Gating -

    currently nothing.
I used a very simple one a long time ago (soupgate)

Don't poll. Just agree with your links to have them crash it to you direct, whenever there is mail available. That's how most links function these days.

I once was a gigo user. But I no longer feel the need to mix netmail with e-mail. So I keep them separate, and don't do any gating...

My binkd is daemonized so it is always listening and watching to outbound to see if anything needs to be sent. In my cron setup I just touch the .flo file for nodes I want to poll. Here's a look at one of my crontab lines..

    03 */1 * * * touch /usr/local/fido/outbound/00991e23.flo

That entry touchs the .flo file to poll my NC at 3 minutes after the hour every
hour. Actually that entry is commented out because my NC and I poll each other many times a day and it's not needed but that's how it can be done.

    2) TIC processing???

I am leaning towards tinyTic as its related to JAMnntpd and

Tinytic is good at what it does but does not send files and tics to other nodes
so if you want to do that you'll need something else.

    others? Setup?

Htick will do everything you need to do with tics. It will require that you take the time to do the setup but it will do what you want it to do.

I am in the midst of setting up mfreq. It also requires some setup but I think it is well worth it.

There is also FREQ-U that is a more simple freq setup much like FD used back in
the day, and maybe some still use today.

Both of those are freqable from the authors or I can plonk what I have here in your inbound for you to look over.

I think FREQ-U is elegant simplicity and works just the way freqing has worked in the past.

By the way, I have FREQ-U here, the linux version, are there others and how do we get them?

There is a Win32 version available, It's the one I used here locally for testing and shares the same code as the *nix version. F'Req FU_W32.Zip from my
    system.

If there is a need, I could also build a version for Mac without much trouble.

Also an untested DOS version exists. Different code using an older compiler. At one point I had a beta tester trying to set it up under OS/2, but I got frustrated because all he could tell me was "it doesn't work" and failed to provide the debug, config, logs. etc that I needed to attempt a fix.

That just seems wrong to my brain.... as the mailer should have/understand something

    binkd poll 1:135/0

put that in cron directly or some BASH script...

And it seems that after slogging through about 1000+ of the archive

    something along the lines of

    binkd -nP1:135/0 ~/fido/binkd/binkd.cfg

Is the solution.. the key is that n.. not -pPxxxxx as the just cause binkd to go spastic... maybe that's how things ran/run in the Binkley world... to my FD brain... je ne comprende! In other words that may be what FD was doing in the background.. it hid it well from admins...

While I get that in the net age of Fido, that polling is/may not be as imperative... but in my brain PROPER Fido'quette would be to at least poll some
what every few hours or so...just the way I see it.

Htick will do everything you need to do with tics. It will require that you take the time to do the setup but it will do what you want it to do.

meh....meh... htick and hpt would be nice, if they were separated from the rest
of the bloat of that other project... I aksed about how to separate the bloat in another echo...

Along with any example setups for both and comments you have on preferences.. FREQ-U may be more up my alley, as its FD related...

Ahh.. I haven't used -n before that I remember. That might work better for

I like freq-u because it is simple and works the way file requesting always
has worked and the setup is similar to the setup with FD or BinkleyTerm back
in the day.. as far as I remember.. :)

I like mfreq because it is very configurable and like configuring those sort
of things. They both come with example configs.. They'll be in your inbound shortly so you can look them over and decide.

binkd starts via init.d script for the "production" node that is setup awaiting
    a number...

The "testing" node has had the latest package corrected to install and then a little updates and it will run on 14.04 basically update-rc should do it, but since I did that and changed the user for the init.d script at the same time it
may need that too... when I reboot this one it starts just like the normal installed repo version does.

I am going to write up a little FAQ and offer the DEB up as soon as I get things settled. I'll figure out what the depends that I removed is doing later to hopefuly fix the manual fix that is needed to get it to start up... It appears from glancing at it based on the fix that the commands to update-rc changed between 14.04 and 15+ due to the systemd plaque ... which on 14.04 you don't need but it seems to effec the upstart stuff.. I'll look at it later to try to fix it so you don't need the "manual" fix.

    BUT

doing binkd -qpP1:135/0 just makes it mad... and does nothing.

    binkd -nP1:135/0 ~/fido/binkd/binkd.cfg

Ahh.. I haven't used -n before that I remember. That might work better for what you are doing. If that does what you need to do add a cron entry that does that.

That is the only way that "works" as *I* expect it to. And keeps binkd from going nuts.

It's still what we need to do. I suppose now that there are no tolls we
    can
poll at will and I usually crash everything to the destination.

For the majority since at least in Z1 its net based and most binkp... Although I am going to play with something to see if that works to do something still net based.. but in a more familar way for me. Its more of project to see what might happen in regards to this....

Yep, just make and install what you need and your done.. :)

Sorry, but you and others keep repeating that, and from that movie..

"I don't think that means what you think it does!" :) ;)

There appears to be very SPECIFIC rules which are hidden away in some crevice I
am not finding, or in some other language..

And that certainly was not the case...

It's important what order you install things.. areafix before hpt etc.

    URRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Where are all these "RULES!!!???"!!!!!!!!!!! ???????????????? That is NOT in the install text, and the other message I have just lists to make this stuff AFTER doing something else huskylib, huskybase, xsmpai fidoconf then do the other stuff like hpt etc...

That means pretty much what did compile when I did, is worthless then, as I didn't go in that order...

    URRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I think that VM is trashed anyway since syncterm just barfed all over it.... who knows..

So SPECIFICALLY what order is this stuff supposed to be done in????

    sudo apt-get build-essential (+20 suggests) packages
    then

    get husky source

    tar -xvf husysource
    cd huskysource

    cd huskylib
    ....
    cd huskybse
    ....
    cd xsmapi
    ....
    cd fidoconf
    .....

Both of those are freqable from the authors or I can plonk what I have
here in your inbound for you to look over.

I'll look them over for the production node once node number and echos are flowing there... THANKS!

    URRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

So SPECIFICALLY what order is this stuff supposed to be done in????

I'm not certain since I never wrote the software, I just use it. I'll list below the steps I take to compile it. It's not necessarily the way to do it, it's just what works for me.

    get husky source

    tar -xvf husysource
    cd huskysource

Copy the huskymak.cfg from huskybse to the root of your husky source directory and make any needed adjustments for your setup. I need to change "LIBDIR=$(PREFIX)/lib" to "LIBDIR=$(PREFIX)/lib64" for my slackware64 setup, others may not need this step.

Then change to these directories and make, and sudo make install.

    huskylib
    smapi
    fidoconf
    hptzip
    areafix
    hpt
    htick
    sqpack

A note on hptzip, you only need to do this step if you want zipInternal support. You also need to set this in your huskymak.cfg, USE_HPTZIP=1. I had to
edit the Makefile in the hptzip directory and change "SHAREDOPT= -shared -Wl" to "SHAREDOPT= -shared -Wall". I don't know if that change is needed in other environments.

If you have successfully built those packages I think you are good to go, you just need to edit your config as you need it. I have a zip file of my configs I
have shared with others to see how I have done it here. It doesn't use every keyword available and won't work for you as is but you can see how I do it here. Let me know if you'd like to have a look at that.

I think we may be straying a little off topic here though, FIDOSOFT.HUSKY would
probably be a better place to talk about husky and it's config.

... I do not think it means what you think it means.
