what is the status of the amiga port of Binkd? Useable? Zimmermanns
hack (AmiBinkD) is more or less unuseable and his source code isn't available anywhere that I can find so fixing his bugs in v9.04 (the
last one I think) is impossible it seems.

Well, the state is "working most of the time", which implies that it sometimes doesn't work and needs a restart.
This is good enough for a point or so, but it appeared too unstable
to me to be used as a node.
I guess the most stable mailer to be used via Internet on Amiga is TrapDoor with telser.device. I would like to see a new stable version
of AmiBinkD, though, or a binkd implementation in GMS_Mailer... ;)

He is still around (2:292/140), so you could try and ask him. But I don't know how active he is. And I think he sold his Amiga, so he can't fix anything.

Will TrapDoor be able to talk with other nodes that run BinkD?

It will be able to talk to other EMSI capable nodes, e.g nodes
running ifcico, qico or others. Not sure if binkd is supporting EMSI
or other protocols that TrapDoor would be able to use. Reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binkp I assume that binkd will not work
with TrapDoor, but haven't tested this myself.
But there are still nodes out there that carry the IFC flag. In fact
I'm working to get ifcico running as well exactly for that purpose to connect with TrapDoor from my Amiga.

EMSI is optimized for modem over POTS. If you want to wallow in
nostagia over old protocols, do it right. Get yourself a modem and a
POTS line and do EMSI over POTS. That was what it was designed for.

Crashmail in a Linux box and then feed the .msg files via NFS to the Amiga.
SCSI drives. Maybe with some good talking to him we can persuade Mirko
to work on a binkd implementation in GMS and then release as
opensource. Or other way around... Who knows... ;-)
