    I try to set up binkd and when I specify the port to the host node I get this error:

    getaddrinfo failed: Servname not supported for ai_socktype (-8)

    The line for the node looks like this:

    node 2:203/0 eljaco.se:24555 secretpasswd
    (passwd removed)

    If I remove the portnumber, the output says: SYS Please use port 24555

    I'm using binkd 1.1a-111 on Debian now, and in that version things work as expected (whereas earlier versions did not).

    I use Binkd 1.1a-99 (Oct 18 2019 19:27:01/Linux), installed from Ubuntu repo. And it seems in your link this is the exact version with this problem, I will see if i can find a up tp date version.

    The ufw is disabled completely (Ubuntu Fire Wall)

    But as I read on in the your link it says something about:

    netstat -anp | grep SYN
    tcp 0 1 192.168.1.5:42058 219.89.83.33:* SYN_SENT 8760/binkd: call to

    Is this something created when the connection is made or something resistant somewhere?
    i can not see this when I use the command: sudo netstat -anp | grep SYN

    Yep! Most likely that will solve the problem.

    (I believe the colon and port number were interpreted as part of the hostname in the earlier versions of binkd, leading to this error...)

    tcp 0 1 192.168.1.5:42058 219.89.83.33:* SYN_SENT 8760/binkd: call to

    Is this something created when the connection is made or something resistant somewhere?

    That was just a check to see what binkd tried to connect to -- in that case, port * = 0 of the remote hub (219.89.83.33), which was not the desired port. =)

    The SYN_SENT status indicates that it has attempted to start the TCP handshake, but has not gotten any further.

    Best regards

    1.1a-99 is buggy and has exactly that problem (and a few others). I guess you are using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. AFAIK you have to compile binkd from github or get the source package from a newer Ubuntu (or Debian) and build that.

    Most sysops never ever make use of the perl hooks. But it is unfortunately a dependency (dynamically linked) in Debian/Ubuntu:

    # ldd /usr/sbin/binkd
    linux-vdso.so.1
    libbz2.so.1.0 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1.0
    libz.so.1 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1
    libresolv.so.2 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libresolv.so.2
    libperl.so.5.32 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libperl.so.5.32
    libpthread.so.0 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0
    libc.so.6 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
    libdl.so.2 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2
    libm.so.6 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6
    libcrypt.so.1 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypt.so.1
    /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

    A statically linked binkd without perl for Linux would be nice.

    1.1a-99 is buggy and has exactly that problem (and a few others). I
    guess you are using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. AFAIK you have to compile binkd
    from github or get the source package from a newer Ubuntu (or Debian)
    and build that.

    If you don't like to compile your own, you could try that:

    Is there a similar software that works insdead of binkd, and working in "older" releases?
    Or I must wait until 2025 when the LTS comes to an end, I don't want to go thru a new install from scratch again if I'm not forced to.

    It was more in response to Conny's problem with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and an outdated binkd in the distro. I do use the perl hooks with binkd and compile it myself.

    Your version is still not a statically linked binary, which would look more like this:

    ~ $ ldd .local/bin/restic
    not a dynamic executable
    ~ $ ldd .local/bin/zig
    statically linked

    Your binkd does not run on a Linux without glibc, libz or libbz2. Usually this isn't a problem as most Linux distros use glibc and have libbz2 installed (most famous exception is Alpine Linux, but even that has a libc6-compat package).

    Not anything I would recommend, if you already have a configured binkd installation. Maybe try the compiled binkd from Scott. We also can help, if you have troubles compiling it yourself. Or I can try to compile the Debian package for Ubuntu 20.04.

    Ok actually I use Linux Mint 20.03 "una" but it's equal to Ubuntu 20.04, they use the same package base.

    But if I still compile it, binkd still want to use libperl5.32?

    No, then can be compiled against libperl5.30. By default the perl feature is disabled.

    Yes! Success!

    And now the rest of the setup, I have all other functions for Fidonet in my BBS software (All Amiga), TrapDoor full registered pacḱage.
    Is it a standard text handling format for all messages on any system for Fidonet?

    The thing is to figure out what and where to change in all cfg files for my new Fidoadress for TrapList, TrapToss,TrapTell, TrapToss as I can't remember wich is doing what in the system.

    One thing I noticed that this did not work in binkd.cfg, "the aso style outbound", is this required for an Amiga system?

    # Use Amiga Style Outbound (ASO)
    #
    # aso

    Otherwise I must config Crashmail in the Linux system.

    No idea if it is required for Amiga or if TrapDoor can be configured for BSO too. Binkd does support ASO, if it is build with --with-aso (which I did):

    Compilation flags: clang, https, amiga_4d_outbound, bwlim.

    Otherwise I must config Crashmail in the Linux system.

    Also a good option. Btw, I'm using a modified Crashmail with ASO :).

    I installed the pre compiled binary for latest version and it works!

    The other problem I struggle with is the sync with my Amiga BBS that share the same harddrive as the paths for Outbound and Inbound with binkd.

    I prefer to try to run the software from my old installation since it's all configured in the Amiga system. I don't know what files binkd want and what files yet. The messages I write in the BBS are saved as xxxxx.MSG.

    Its a looong time since I knew all about this and how it worked and in what order, and to run everyting automaticly.

    From TrapToss.Man:

    4.12. Outbound Handling

    To facilitate cooperation with a vast number of mailers,
    TrapToss supports a number of different outbound directory
    formats. You can choose between 2D and 4D handling of Netmail
    bundles, of EchoMail (arcmail) bundles, and of Flow files. The
    keywords (NO)FORCE4DMO, (NO)OLDSTYLEMO, (NO)OLDSTYLEFLO and
    (NO)OUT4D control this. Their defaults are set for perfect usage
    with the TrapDoor mailer.

    It looks like TrapToss / TrapDoor only support 2D BSO (without zones and points as fake nets) and 4D ASO. I think 4D ASO is the better option.

    From TrapToss.Man:

     4.12. Outbound Handling

           To facilitate cooperation with a vast number of mailers,
         TrapToss supports a number of different outbound directory
         formats. You can choose between 2D and 4D handling of Netmail
         bundles, of EchoMail (arcmail) bundles, and of Flow files. The
         keywords (NO)FORCE4DMO, (NO)OLDSTYLEMO, (NO)OLDSTYLEFLO and
         (NO)OUT4D control this. Their defaults are set for perfect usage
         with the TrapDoor mailer.

    It looks like TrapToss / TrapDoor only support 2D BSO (without zones and points as fake nets) and 4D ASO. I think 4D ASO is the better option.

    I downloaded the trapToss archive from Aminet but when I uncompress it all the textfiles are empty, the filename is there but contains no text at all?! I used FTP to get it, is it a broken archive or is it packed intentionally with zero text files? No error when unpack it.

    I got the same file, the docs are fine and have content:

    There must be something wrong with your lzh unpacker?

    Ok, strange, I unpacked it in Linux, but i have no problem with other LHA files before, I will unpack in in the Amiga and see how it goes.
