• xlaxnode registration

From Richard Webb@1:116/901 to all on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 16:28:48
    Hello all!

Back in the day when I was in Iowa about a decade or more ago I was using this software for nodelist compiler. SO when I got the itch to do another fidonet node I downloaded ver 2.56 from Bob Juge's site before he went down. I note Scott is no longer listed in the nodelist and am curious if he's still at same snail mail address for registrations. I'd like to register this so it can be automated in batch files.

THought I'd ask here as this was a fairly popular nodelist compiler with binkleyterm since it would produce a version seven nodelist. Running bt 2.60 under dos 6.22, pots line only.

    Regards,
    Richard

    I still use it - it's great!

Scott did an uncrippled version for TBBS called TBBSNC (and TBBSDIFF for updating the nodelist with the latest diff). Since Scott is no longer around and eSoft no longer has any interest in TBBS I think Richard could easily get hold of a copy from, say, www.tbbs.org (I think it is). If not I have a copy which I still use.

I don't know if Richard is running TBBS or not. It doesn't matter because TBBSNC works just like XLAXNODE - it *is* XALXNODE to all intents and purposes,
but with additions to work with TBBS (which one doesn't have to use if one is not running TBBS). However the major advantage is that it needs no registration. It was issued free to TBBS users and, presumably, eSoft paid a royalty to Scott. But since eSoft has washed its hands entirely of TBBS all the
TBBS software is appearing for download free of charge from several servers.

    Best wishes, David

    Hello Richard,

As I wrote to Dallas, TBBSNC *is* XLAXNODE but without the need for registration. If you can't find a copy, let me know and, when I get back to the

Actually now I come think about it, I don't think there's any difference between TBBSNC and XLAXNODE. There isn't any need - apart from the fact that TBBSNC doesn't need registering. I was thinking of George Peace's mail processor. I can't think what the generic version was called (was it QECHO?) but the TBBS version with access to the TBBS database was called FLAME.

    Wow.

I keep backups. I spend far too much time on my BBS not to have backups. If one
config line somewhere got changed, or a comment put in a batch file it needs to
be backed up because the work that goes into reading documentation
alone is expensive. I read a doco for 1 hour to fix a problem by tweaking 1 line somewhere ... that was 1 hrs worth of work. It must be backed up.

IN the docs I have for 2.56 it said this, and at that time they stated $15 per node. THIs tells me they were node specific. HE might have started giving them

The keys cost nothing and were promptly forwarded by Scott when he
received a written request. I recall that I got my first key from
Scott in 1991 when my system became 1:17/67 and my second license
when I became NC of Net 3409 twelve years ago. The keys are simple
but I think they are node-specific.
BOy wish I would have known
that. AS I said the docs stated it a little differently.
ON the order form in his docs it states:

Number of nodes listed: _________ at $15 each $ _________

If I put it up for ftp can you get it? Or is there any other way of

wIsh I could but that's broken with my other internet access acount and my antique here at the moment thanks to them wanting everything at all except email and newsgroups going through their proxy server <bummer>. YOu can send it
routed to me through my uplink however which is 1:3634/12. He's internet connected for fido mail and will route files on to me.

you may route it thru my node to richard's, david... my system routes files for
all and richard connects here for everything as he is a POTS only node...

i don't know what kind of majik it may take on your end to set up to route netmail and files for him (116/901) thru me but worst case scenerio is to just send it to me and i'll reattach it to him...

Hi David, My uplink sent it on as you see.

Now a question as I haven't given this a test drive yet. Do I need to rename xlaxnode.ctl or anything else?

Just tried that, renaming the control file got me there. Thanks a bunch!!!

OF course played with it in another dir instead of screwing up my compiled nodelist if something went awry.

Yes, but only after I used a command line ftp client (lftp), shortly before having to leave for church, I had to open up the church this afternoon, for the church "band".

Have just gotten home, and gotten your reply ... , many thanks, it is still on my Linux system, but will move it latter, have added a short readme to the archive explaaining what to do with the files should my memory fail me.

    Many thanks,

OK thanks, Mark. I'll give it a try. Can't say I've done this on the Fidonet for a long time! I have a feeling that attaches get removed at some point. However, I've just started using Irex again and I think I know how to send a file directly from that.

Ah, I wonder if your normal client actually sends the word "anonymous". I have a French computer that sends "anonyme" and, of course, that doesn't work.

I've just been to church, too. I went to a neighbouring church in Henley-on-Thames to size up the opposition (I'm actually organist and choirmaster in Wokingham) but their advertised choral evensong wasn't on!

Not sure, as I cannot find where that gets set ... , but it is probably that or a malformed e-mail address ...

from the docs I have for 2.56 it states $15 per node and sure
indicated that they were node specific.

My apologies. I re-read my XlaxNode docs and the cost of a key was $15.00. However, Scott did not charge anything for a key delivery to the United States or Canada.

BOy wish I would have known

Again. I acknowledge what the cost of a key was but I did like the free delivery and Scott was always a gentleman to deal with. And his programs have always worked. I've run XlaxNode and XlaxDiff under DOS and various Windows iterations. They still work when I run them in a Windows XP Pro DOS box.

WAs missing what you were saying there, sory 'bout that <g>.

THat's what I"ve always liked about those programs, they work, reliably <g>. the iteration for tbbs seems to have filled my need there and I can let this batch file run truly unattended now if I"ve got to go out of town on business <g>. I also like the ease of setting up configuration files. I seem to have best luck with just about anything with a flat ascii file for its configuration
