This echo is for discussion of binkleyterm.
Binkleyterm is A Freely Available FidoNet Compatible Electronic
mail interface and dumb terminal program.
BInkleyterm is a product of Bit Bucket software which was
"Written by Vince Perriello and Bob Hartman, with contributions
from countless others."
That then leaves the newcomer with this question.
What does Binkleyterm do?
Binkleyterm is a Mail Interface and Dumb Terminal Package.
It can be operated as can any dumb terminal program using a
serial port interface, or as a Fidonet mailer or "front end"
using a regular pstn modem, or Telnet under a virtual modem setup.
BInkleyterm was designed for the semi-automated sending and
receiving of electronic mail and files within FidoNet- compatible electronic mail networks. I have used it as a dumb terminal
in a packet radio application as well. Although it was not
designed specifically for that purpose it worked for manually
interacting with packet radio bulletin boards and other systems.
ITs terminal mode is as versatile as many shareware or
commercial applications.
The latest version of binkleyterm released by the authors was
version 2.60, and was released for a variety of computer
platforms and operating systems.
Plain text documentation can often be found on fidonet
systems as BDOC_ASC.ZIP. MS Word documentation is also
commonly available.
Binkleyterm is configured for use on your system by editing
plain text files. WIthin the software archive
are sample configuration files for binkleyterm, as well as a
complete configuration reference provided in documentation
archives.
Many fidonet system operators are binkleyterm users. IF you
have questions regarding the configuration or operation of
Binkleyterm consult the documentation, then ask for further
clarification or help if needed in this echomail conference.
THere are many here familiar with binkleyterm and its various
uses who will be glad to assist you.
So, if you're new to fidonet, and BInkleyterm stay tuned.
Back in the day this was quite a popular place with many good folks
asking questions, and providing help to binkleyterm users.
Yes, we answered a lot of basic queries that were covered in
the docs, but at times some of the more arcane uses and
features were discussed as well. I've wished more than once that
I had those old archives, as there were discussions of such topics
as how to capture caller id data to one's log; unusual uses for
function requests, etc.
Anybody with archives of this area from those more active days
could sure provide a great service to today's binkleyterm user.
IF you have such archives please let me know. At one time
I had some from 1992-97. However, Katrina did
her number on that one. I'm sure Bob Juge the perennial
binkleyterm help node had quite the extensive collection as
well. But, as we all know, Bob is no longer with us. So,
if you have such archives of this echo please advise me, and
the rest of us. WE can then see what can be done about making
that information available in some form.
