Do not rush. Not working yet.

I mean the whole concept of the gate. With my pc down, I can't even access the info for manual logins (via Netrunner) to a BBS. But with Telegram, I can be at any device and participate in some echos of interest.

Stas probably turned on the gate, processed a few backlog msgs, and then posted his announcement?

Even the whole idea of just installing TgM on another device is a simple matter to "activate" and all the groups carry over. If BBSs has something similar (verification via email or txt) that would get me up and running. The way it is now, all the login info and pwds are inaccessible on the pc that is "down".

Unfortunately, as has been repeatedly told to me elsewhere, the BBS message system doesn't work well for using a single ID (point, user ID, what have you) from multiple systems. You can log in from pretty much anywhere, as long as you recall your info.

I don't think that's going to change real soon. Or if it's possible without a full redo of the whole system.

Being a point or not is not the problem. For now, I can use my NNTP
setup from another PC (which I am obviously doing now). However,
it's not a portable PC. But if there was a way to recall my login
credentials, I could then setup up Thunderbird (TB) and NNTP easier
    on an alternate laptop.

Even a "recall login credentials" feature via email would be nice.

TB is configured to "always request authentication", but there is no
local file that I can access to decode what the pw is.

With Veleno BBS (the webpoint solution) the credentials are saved in
Firefox's "Saved passwords". That makes it easy to recall and copy
for login on a replacement laptop.

I guess you use the cloud for that? Even a copy of the credentials stored in a gmail folder could work.

I do think some BBSes at least do have a "forgot password" type option that involves email.

I *think* I've seen that on a couple. It could certainly be a selling point for a BBS. Without it, the user might just decide WTF and not bother.

I'm now preoccupied copying the Firefox login creds for some of the online web resources I use for the bookshop for placing orders. What a horrible task. That, on top of other things I need to do today is driving me up the wall. ...All because in iddy biddy fan decides not to cooperate. :( I may muster the courage to disassemble the laptop and at least try to clean the fan and add some lube later.

That T60 laptop (my only laptop at the time) was the machine I carried around to do computer support work (using a mobile dongle to get internet) for at-home visits. Along the way, I adapted it to working at home to finish bookshop database things (MS Office Acess). It is configured so that all I have to do is copy the database file back and forth from a USB stick that I carry between shop and home.

But with the T60 down, I don't have an @home pc for that.

I have MS Access on an another desktop stored at the shop, but I don't feel like lugging that whole thing home and rearraging my workspace at home to use it.

I opened the T60 last night to remove the keyboard to expose the fan/heatsink. But it requires more "screw"ing around to get to the fan. Not fun for me.

If I can motivate myself, it would be worth a try to clean and lube the existing fan (unless it is an unserviceable design) ..and maybe get back online before the new replacement fan arrives in 2 weeks.

I have a T540p from February.. but I never got around to moving the salient progs over to it. When the covid thing hit, I had to wonder what's the rush.

Sometimes I need to "send" info to myself from the shop to home and

Yes, but I don't experiment with my pcs. I treat them as appliances and expect them to work. Even if I *did* backup the T60 contents, there would be no option to restore it anywhere else anyway. :( I purchased PCMover Professional a few months ago with the idea of migrating my whole operation to the T540p, but I never followed through. I'm already witnessing the inconvenience of not having my speccial programs on the T540p. (AnyAudioConverter, Audacity, IrfanView, etc..) What a pain to find and reinstall from scratch. One thing that PCMover promised is migrating my licensed copy of MO Office 2007 - that is the main thing really.

It's a holiday Monday here, so I may get the courage to disassemble the T60 and dig out the fan. Never did that before and I've never cleaned and lubed a fan.

That's interesting you call pcs an appliance. I saw the same expression earlier in a totally different conversation.

I see computers, phones, even applications for them as tools. And I want

Ok.. Maybe appliance is not a good term. My T60 has grown into a quite a customized machine with all the progs that I need. I sure miss them while I am using the T540p right now. But I don't fiddle with (drivers, config, etc..) making my pcs do anything beyond the norm.

Your experimentation, although noble, is not something I would even attempt with the T60. The closest I've come to messing with normal operations on the T60 would be live-CD boots of a linux distro that I am curious about. On the T60, I can Hibernate the current Windows session and boot something else from CD or USB.

for on equipment it wasn't made for.
OK.. The T60 is an appliance with all the "tools" I need! LOL

    Perfectly fine.

Your experimentation, although noble, is not something I would
even attempt with the T60. The closest I've come to messing with
normal operations on the T60 would be live-CD boots of a linux
distro that I am curious about. On the T60, I can Hibernate the
current Windows session and boot something else from CD or USB.

As I said, your computers are more vital to your business than mine. Completely unde4standable.
