It looks as if the mass hijacking / destruction of aircraft which
was foiled this week was intended to take place on August 22nd,
which Bernard Lewis noted corresponded to the date in the Islamic
calendar when Mohammad rode the winged horse Buraq "to the furthest
mosque" (Jerusalem). While he said that it was far from certain
that Ahmadinejad was planning any cataclysmic events for that date,
he felt it was wise to bear the possibility in mind. Whether this
is the possibility he had in mind, or whether it is a distraction
from something even more sinister, time will tell, but he seems
to have "got it right". I would be inclined to avoid flying on
or around August 22nd, just in case.

THE 24 people accused of plotting despicable mass murder are almost
all British citizens who appeared to lead ordinary suburban lives.

A Heathrow airport worker, a cake seller, two cricket-loving brothers
and two recent Muslim converts were among the two dozen suspects
arrested in a series of dramatic raids across London and Birmingham.

Prime Minister John Howard yesterday described as a "chilling new
dimension'' the terrorists' plans to use liquid chemical bombs to blow
up planes over five US cities.

The arrests came just 12 days before the date of the planned attacks
    - August 22. A test run was believed to be planned for coming days.
