Digital city rises from a swamp

    DECEMBER 05, 2006

DEVELOPERS in South Korea are building the world's first digital city
at a cost of $US25 billion ($32 billion) and its first 2000 residents
are expected to be living there in 2009.

Songdo City, designed to house 65,000 residents in fully wired houses,
is the crown jewel of an ambitious government plan to turn a 600ha
muddy reclaimed plot of land on the Yellow Sea into a gateway to
    northeast Asia.

It will have the most advanced digital infrastructure, from blanket
wireless internet coverage and automated recycling to universal
smartcards for paying bills, accessing medical records and opening
    doors.

Songdo will merge medical, business, residential and government data
systems into a so-called ubiquitous city on a scale never seen before.

All houses and offices will have built-in computers to collect data
from swipe cards and sensors for the U-life management centre run by
Songdo U-Life, a joint venture between Songdo's US developer, Gale International, and LG Electronics subsidiary LG CNS, the creator of
    Songdo's digital backbone.

It is the ultimate testing ground for tracking products and people
with radio-frequency identification chips, a technology facing
resistance in other countries over privacy issues.

Dogs and Cats have them why not us? It will be forced on us one day. Might not be in our life time. But it will happen. This is the start. If they can make this work, it will show other countries that is more then possible.

I hope this blows up in there face, and some kiddie hacker puts there little toy city to a stand still. ;)

I wouldn't worry too much about the kiddie hacker, but the idea must
be appealing to terrorists, criminals etc, as well as researchers,
marketers, control freaks & anyone who can buy & sell the data trails
created by the citizens. I'm sure the "elite" - judges, politicians,
executives etc - would have their purchases & movements & health
records suppressed, but the rest would be open to surveilling &
profiling in every aspect of life.

    Cheers, Steve..

This is true. The criminals will have a field day with this. The credit card numbers (standard stuff). Anything that you can think of can be used against the people that are involved with this test city. Thats what I think it really is. A test to see if it can be done. But the little hackers of the world will also have fun with this. If the information pipe line of this system is stopped. What will people do? As it seems, every thing will be done by come sort of computer transaction.

Again, the hackers will have fun, and criminals will have a field day,
but the authorities will retain control of the communications and
computer systems. It could be handy to (for example) have a panel
in your home with pushbuttons to summon emergency services, doctor,
taxi, and have them respond without you needing to tell them your
name & address - it will be coded to send that. Likewise, if you
fall behind in the rent, or council rates, you could be blocked
from your home (electronic key won't work). If President Bush
pays a visit, people could be locked in their apartment buildings
and prevented from opening windows until he passes - it might be
like living in a supermax prison, if others control the decision-
    making.
