• setting up Db

From Doctor Wade@1:218/840 to All on Wednesday, September 01, 2021 07:42:16
Greetings all! I am new to using D'Bridge and I am attempting to setup an old school BBS like I ran in the '90s. I am running OS/2 Warp 4 and have Db setup and running with Binkd accdepting all the incoming echomail from my Mystic BBS hub. I have DB setup to toss mail into C:\Max\Msg\. I am subbed to the FSXNet network and the mail groups are setup in Maximus as C:\Max\Msg\FSX_* . I notice that DB will toss the mail correctly but will not scan and pack up outgoing mail. Is this a setting I am missing or is a 3rd party software required to gather outgoing mail? Currently I am using Fastecho to scan and pack mail wheneve a user exits the bbs. How do you guys handle that?

Another question I have is do you guys use a batch file to load DB and in turn load your bbs? Currently I have DB loading from a command line as well as Maximus so both are running independant of the other. This setup kind of works but I keep thinking there must be a better way. In the old days I ran Frontdoor/RA BBS and everything ran smoothly with a single albeit large batch file but that was the days before telnet took over and modems faded away. Thanks for any suggestions and pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks for using D'Bridge - When using BBS software, it should specifically support the *.MSG format or you must use a tosser that extrapolates the messages from the BBS into *.MSG format.

You can easily test this by taking your BBS out of the picture
temporarily and using the D'Bridge internal editor to write some messages. You will see that D'Bridge scans and packs them out, so it sounds like the issue may have more to do with your setup.

Another question I have is do you guys use a batch file to load DB and in t load your bbs? Currently I have DB loading from a command line as well as

You can use a batch file or specify the commands in Config-Advanced-BBS.

Its up to you... its very flexible.

Thanks for the reply Nick. Maximus uses the *.msg format. I sent a test message to the FSX_NET hub robot using the D'Bridge editor and as soon as I exited the editor D'Bridge sent it out to my hub. I looked in my c:\max\msg\fsx_tst directory and saw that 12.msg was created by the built in editor and sent out. I logged into Maximus and sent out another message to the robot and it just sat there. I looked in the message directory and saw that message as 13.msg. D'Bridge did nothing with that message. i can see the message in the built in editor of D'Bridge but when I exit it ells me that 1 message scanned, none packed. I guess my question is what does it take to get D'Bridge to send the message out that was created by Maximus? Maximus will exit with a errorlevel when a user hangs up after entering an echomail or netmail. Do I need to tell Maximus to send D'Bridge a semaphore to rescan and pack?

This was already the case in the early years of D'Bridge, if you enter messages via D'Bridge editor, then that trigger is immediately present to send the mail.

But mail messages entered externally then that trigger is not present.
What I did then and still do is send the mail manually from D'Bridge via menu option UTILITIES and then Process mail (manually).

But there is another very nice option in D'Bridge and that is via menu option CONFIG and then Scheduler/Routing.
In the scheduler you can create events for sending mail. So you can, for example, checks 2 times a day to see if mail needs to be sent.

I hope you can do something with this.

    Kind regards,
    Leo

And another option is to send the mail via a BATCH file.
You can do this after every visit to your BBS by using the DBUTIL utility.

    POLL
    ====
The DBUTIL POLL commands adds a POLL entry to the disk-based queue.
Depending on the priority, the system will be called either immediatelyor during the next applicable mail event.
When you POLL a system,D'Bridge will call to see if you have any mail waiting. The syntax for POLL is:

    C:\DB> DBUTIL [priority] POLL <Address>
    ie.
    C:\DB> IMMEDIATE POLL 1:105/3

I think you were looking for this.
This email was sent using DBUTIL.

    Kind regards,
    Leo

DBUTIL POLL is not working, i thought that would immediately look at unsent mail.

Thanks Leo! I will add this to the Maximus runbbs.cmd and see if this will pick up and pack messages created on the BBS.If not, I will try your add to the DB scheduler and see if it will pack and send out mail maybe twice a day.

Yep. I tried it and it will poll my hub and scan for mail but it refuses to pack/forward outgoing echomail. I think DB sees the nessages that need to go out because the log shows
    " building the outbound queue
    6 messages scanned, none packed
    Scanning for outbound ECHOmail
    No ECHOmail messages forwarded"

I believe the 6 messages it refers to are "stuck" test messages destined for FSX_TST hub robot. Thanks for your help. I will keep plugging away at it. I may look for help in the Maximus muffin echo and see what those guys are using. I realise I am butting my head against ancient software...

Yes, you can create the semaphores DBRIDGE.RSN (ReScan Netmail) or DBRIDGE.RSE (ReScan Echomail).

When you see "xxx messages scanned, xxx packed" that refers to Netmail.

When you see "xxx messages in xxx areas forwarded" that means Echomail.

Thanks that is good to know. I will try having Maximus create a semaphore when a user enters a message and see if DB will pack it and send it out.
