• RetroPie for Raspberry Pi 4 now working!

From Paulie420@PAULIE42 to All on Sunday, May 10, 2020 12:33:53
So I have this project that had recently taken a back burner because RetroPie wasn't working for the newest Raspberry Pi 4 machine>>> But they recently released a new version that seems to work pretty well with RPi4!

So, I'm currently firing up an image of RetroPie and going to pop it into the RPi4... I have some of my own ROMs to start with, but I wonder if anyone knows of any good collections of software>>> Currently I hear that the voltermort 65GIG collection is very detailed, however they only release it as an image with support (RetroPie version) for the RPi3 and below... :(

Anywho, anyone know of a collection of just ROMs and support files (descriptions of games, preview images or videos, etc)?

What I'm going to end up with is pretty cool IMO. I have an old Apple G4 basketball-style computer... and try as I might to get any 2020 workable system on that old G4 hardware, it seems like its come to the end of its life-cycle. I *love* the looks of this machine, tho - and think its monitor which is mounted on a beautiful chrome arm is just awesome... and, would work PERFECTLY for a small 8-bit (and more, I think I can get PS1 and PSP and even some Dreamcast) emulation machine... So, I'm working on getting the original LCD hardwired into my RPi4 - which is a task, or worst case I'll just pop a new LCD in there and that will be simple to connect.

Woot woot; happy that I can move on this project again.

Curious to hear if anybody posts some info.

I've just bought a 128GB card on amazon that has 18,000 roms or something. Not sure if it is a scam, but I thought I'd give it a go.

I have a couple of RPi3's, so I bought a GameHAT a cool case and some controllers - as a project for me and my 8 yr old to build. He's bugging me everyday to see if the stuff has arrived!

    What is the gamehats function???
I've been playing with retropie yesterday and am all ready, just waiting for an xbox360 wireless reciever so i can use my old xbox controllers with the system.

As for the ROMs, I'm thinking I'll lean away from any huge collection as its easy to load yourself - and scrape the video and JPG info about each title.

Woot woot... theres ton of extras in the config, to setup emulation station to look really cool. Just like KODI.

But for $40 (which includes the 128GB SD card) - somebody else has done all that work for you, and you have 18,000 of them! (I think anyway... :)

(I didnt know that there were that many....)

I just got an alert that it will be arriving today - woot.

Cool. Let us know how it works out. I'm especially curious about the stick/buttons and durability.

I built one a few weeks back using the dev version for the rpi4, it seemed to work pretty well.

I have a mountain of ROMs that I've acquired over the years, but they're a bit of a mess.

I was hoping for a little more horsepower to run some n64 games, but alas, the n64 emulator doesn't seem to function any better on the pi4 than it did on the pi3 at this time. Maybe once they can optimize stuff for the pi4 a bit better, things will smooth out.

Very cool, thanks for sharing. I'm creating a system from an old Apple G4 basketball PC - remember the one with the LCD screen on a chrome arm? I think its a great form factor and is big enough to hold a battery or use a plug - so it'll be a neat 14" monitor that I can give to my kids, or me, and take anywhere in the house... woot woot.

I totally agree.. and I'm even feeling like... Nintendo; regular NES 8-bit doesn't feel perfect!! However, I am using a keyboard right now as I wait for an xbox wireless reciever for xbox 360 remotes... so I'll try it out when I have regular controllers and all - and it better function.

I wonder what box, as cheap as possible and hopefully smaller than a normal console, will run everything up to N64 (I know, I know... but at least run it GOOD ENOUGH..), Dreamcast and others all in one system. I want to create an emulation box to be done with it-- one box, all my systems up to N64 and I can stop working on it. :P

    a NUC? An ODRIOD? Hmmmm...
My RPi 4 is a 1GB version - I guess I could take it up to the 4GB version before I write em off. They do so much other stuff, I don't mind ordering more of them.

I have a USB SNES controller and that works great. For newer stuff I use a PS4 controller.

I still need to get the PS4 controller working right with MAME so I can use both sticks in SMASH TV.

I have the 4GB version, it doesn't make a difference. The problem with the N64 Emulation stuff is due to graphics processing. The RPi 4's GPU is a bit better than the 3 (as it can do 4k), but it's still not up to snuff, apparently.
