True. The infrastructure of the "information superhighway" or "series of tubes" isn't all that interesting to most people.

I just watched https://www.hbo.com/q-into-the-storm and I was amazed at the similarities to BBSing (personalities and use of obsolete amateur software) - only, now it's like multiplied by a million.

Well, I guess the people who really wants to talk about the Internet are in some Internet
    Engineering Taskforce mailing list :-)

Also in the IRCNow plarform, probably. They are trying to gather noobs there and teach them how to
be proper administrators. It seems to be a hobby thing, but I am sure you will get a lot of
    Internet specific conversation there.

If you want to get Internet specific talk _here_, I think the faster way to accomplish it is to
state your love or hate for ipv6. That always works in other subs :-)

Thanks! After I posted that message and saw the mess it made, I
realized it was the Y2K issue I had read about a few weeks ago. And
thanks for the link to the 2.3 version. Unfortunately, it still has
issues reading some of my other BBS QWK packets and since I finally got
my Linux version of MultiMail working the way I want, I'm going to just
    stick with it for now.

I liked BlueWave back in the 90's but my favorite that I still love
today (but I don't have the license key anymore and it's kind of broke

I haven't heard anyone use the term "the web". It's usually
referred to "the net", or "the EEEnrnet".

But websites are still referred to as WEBsites, and not
    NETsites.

I used "dub dub dub" when communicating the "www" parts in a web
address years ago. And even that is depricated now.

Back to your question.. it's the thing that allows systems to
exchange data when connected to systems all over the world. It
used to be something that used TCP/IP, but now there are many
other ways to connect and exchange stuff I suppose.

The internet is a ubiquitous thing by now. I doubt that people
care what it really is and how it works. They just want to turn
on their computers or devices and go.

BTW.. There is a nation-wide cell/data disruption with Rogers.
Their discount service Chatr is affected too.

"We sincerely apologize to our customers. We know connectivity
is critical and are working hard to restore services for
customers who continue to experience wireless interruptions.
Residential and business wireline internet services are not
impacted. We will continue to provide updates."

The first signs of the disruption started around 1am EDT today.

Other carriers seem to be affected somewhat too.

Folks using cell/data for their internet access, can't.

Yeah, I guess since I have been away from BBS systems since the
Internet/web hit us in the 90's . . . I miss the large numbers of
people frequenting the BBSs. I don't want all the world on the BBS

Sure. But wouldn't it make sense for the shorted form (e.g. operationalsecurity.es) to point to the server of most use/typing (e.g. the web server)?

It used to annoy me when a site required a "www." sub-domain be specified in a web browser. Now, that's pretty rare.

It makes sense to redirect the traffic, sure. My services usually do short_form
    www_form.

Some services from the Spanish administration have hosts with names such as www1, www2, www3 under the same domain, so expecting that short_form will lead you to the proper web server is not going to work, though.

General rule for web is to "always" use the bare url, or never use it...
if you create a cookie by default on the raw url, it will be sent to
other hosts, which may emphatically not be the desired effect. This has
and does lead to security leaks in practice.

Imagine the potential problems for dyndns for example, github already experienced some of these, which is why the project/account web hosting
is a different tld with no bare domain usage for web.
