Was it like the Tour de France nonsense of a few years ago where some
French media persons, in a car, ran some non-French competitors off the
    road?

I hadn't heard about that, but I remember the controversy in 2005 when Lance Armstrong was accused of cheating by using steroids to enhance his performance.

Yes, and it was more than "accused". He was found guilty of that,
and eventually admitted it all publicly. Banned for life and all
titles he won stripped from his record.

I am a little surprised you did not. They were even showing footage of it during other non-bicycling sports events. They may have been just fans,
but they ran a bunch of guys off the road and into a fence.

He wasn't just accused, he was found guilty and stripped of his medals, and so were others of his team, if I remember correctly.

I was fairly young in the 80s and didn't pay a whole lot of attention to who did what in sports. But yeah, I've often heard of baseball players potentially using performance enhancing drugs.

One of the downfalls of pro sports comes from when the athlete's income from sponsorships and endorsements is greater than his regular paycheck. Add to that age or diminishing talent from wear and tear injuries, and opportunities to do better outside the normal routine will begin looking attractive.

yeah mcguire and bonds were all roided up and paying to the media.

then mark retired and got back to being small again.
he said he regrets taking them and he didn't need to take them which i believe. he was a big hitter before he got all roided up.

I used to really follow baseball until that period. Once they allowed
Bonds to break the career HR record, then "retire," I gave MLB up.

As far as I am concerned, it went from being a sport to being in the same category as "rasling." Coreographed and fake.
