• Message too long

From Bill Gordon@1:123/22 to All on Saturday, July 31, 2004 12:21:48
    Hello All.

I'm getting a TON of 'badmail' messages, simply because they are too long. How
can I change this? I've looked in fesetup, but find nowhere to change the message length. I'm using Fastecho 1.45+

    Thanks.......

    Bill

    Hi! Bill,

Check your FeSetup-->Parameters-->'Message buffer size' value. Here's why, from the FE doc file:

    -----8<-----C-U-T--H-E-R-E----->8-----
    5.4.6.3 - Message buffer size

While FastEcho performs the toss or scan operations, it avails it-
self of a buffer containing one message at time. The present item is
needed to define the maximum size in kilobytes of this buffer and, thus,
the maximum size in kilobytes of a message that can be tossed or scan-
ned. the bigger this "message buffer size" will be, the bigger the size
of a single message could be. My only suggestion is to use a buffer as
large as possible, reducing it only in case you notice that your compu-
ter is short on memory. Using a large buffer doesn't affect the tossing
or scanning performances. In this case the admittible values range from
16kB to 64kB (upto 512kB may be setup for the OS/2 version). Only for
this tutorial, leave the message buffer size at 0 value (leaving 0 it
defaults to 32k) then, after you have completed the installation, go
    back and tune this parameter.
    -----8<-----C-U-T--H-E-R-E----->8-----

I have mine set to 512(k) even though I've been running FE with some form of Windows over the last 10 years. I just shelled out from FeSetup in a Win95 DOS-box and DOS shows 594k free, so that may be the clue. :) Can't remember any problems with message size.[shrug]

Also check your FeSetup-->'Advanced options'-->'Toss buffers' setting. It may not have any bearing on the problem, but should be on "Large".

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I changed my buffer to 512k (as big as it will allow), but still getting the same amount of bad files (message too big).

True, the messages are HUGE, but I have no actual way to see HOW huge.

I guess that's the best I can do, huh??

    Thanks......

I bet in the stats echo or the linux mailing list echos?

hey send the offending message to a file from your editor?
    then look at the size.

I guess that's the best I can do, huh??
I could only get 64k out of the dpmi and dos versions:(
Thats when I went looking elsewhere.

    Hello Douglas.

Replying to a msg dated 05 Aug 04 22:04, from you to me.

I saved the message to a file and checked the size, but it was only 72k. And with my buffer set to 512k, it should have been big enough.

without running a splitting tool beforehand, yes... there are a couple of tools
that can split large messages... they'll be following the ^aSPLIT proposal... PKTSORT is one such tool, IIRC...
