The trouble with spit files is the file is just as big "total" as
it was before you split it <g>. It's a little easier to get out
but I've heard from some people that they don't like split files.

they are easier to get out but you cannot recover the FILE_ID.DIZ from them very easily... especially not with FDN processing software... so you end up with crappy truncated descriptions for the parts :/

i much prefer the single file format instead of the following mess... the descriptions are shite on *4* of the 6 parts of the multi-part archive :(

    Hello Janis!

Ok, I took a look at the Windows freeciv archive and at 48M, it's just
too large. I don't like hatching files in win_game or macgame that a
lot bigger than 30+ meg. Certainly over 40Meg is too large.

When I have 35+ downlinks for an area (win_games and macgame have that
many), a file of that size becomes very unmanageable :(

The DDE115* windows file is getting larger, but so far it's ok. If it
grows to be larger than 40M, then I will stop distributing that one.
It's just not worth it when people can get these really large files on
web sites if they want them.

That was the reason that made it as both zip and rar and the rar is
    split of the games.

Then is there now Vassal Engine for Windows and MAC and those is not so
    big files.

Yes, saw those, thanks, and yeah they are not as large which is great.

I shall see to windows and MAC files is only getting up to 30M and else can the
nodes get them for Windows and MAC from my GmsNet then. There should now come some other files from 25Assist for update when I got time for first linux and then Windows + MAC.

    Take care,
    Gert

    Hi Mark,

That was the reason that made it as both zip and rar and the rar is
    split of the games.

gert, then we have twice the drive space and bandwidth consumed... please choose one format or the other [sigh]

As far as Windows and Mac files go, one file is all you'll continue to see <g> I see no point in distributing more that one type per "file". So I agree, sending out split archives of a game as well as one large separate archive makes no sense, and just strains systems down the line!

The trouble with spit files is the file is just as big "total" as
it was before you split it <g>. It's a little easier to get out

You are not alone in not liking split archives. I've stopped sending them out.
If a file is too large to be sent out as one file, it's too large period <g>

File descriptions are ok over here for multi-part archives so I guess BBBS is doing something right <g>.. but I understand that not all processors are going to work the same way as BBBS. Given the number of games that go through the filegate, I can understand what a PITA it sounds like for you.

    Take care,
    Janis

I checked it out it was not 25assist it self but a new file for Data to it and it was too big so I dropped, so if nodes and user like the file they can self download it from www.sourceforge.net

Yes, good idea. Thanks for checking the size first, I know some of these files
    can be huge <g>
