• binkd.txt?

From Jeff Smith@1:282/1031 to Janis Kracht on Friday, January 06, 2017 04:02:18
    Hello Janis,

Who has the responsibility of generating the binkd.txt/binkd.nl file(s)?

I see that they are created using a script by:

    "Created by binkd_nodelister.pl version 1.0 - 26 November 2002
    # Copyright (c) 2002 by Jerry Schwartz and Write by Night"

I ask because BinkD chokes on the latest BINKD.TXT file that I grabbed from filegate earlier. Seems there are many, many, many entries such as:

    Node 1:11/331 ftn.emergencyscene.net
    -
    Node 1:11/340 binkp.echo-base-bbs.com
    -
    Node 1:120/0 ftn.rocasa.com;95.154.237.85 -
    Node 1:120/229 xblade.mooo.com -
    Node 1:120/301 bbs.legionhq.net:60178 - Node 1:120/302 mojo.synchro.net ;bbs.mojosworld.net -

BinkD here chokes on the lines containing just a "-". I cleaned up the first 1000 or lines. But if I run BinkD I get:

    03:40 [21818] /home/bbs/sbbs/binkd/binkd.nl: line 1027: error in configuration files
    03:40 [21818] -: unknown keyword

Hmm... where do you see that in the list? There is a problem, I agree, but I don't see nodelister.pl in the list.

I see CRLF at the end of the domain field in a lot of the entries, and yes, that would cause problems.

Jame Clay creates the list but he hadn't been able to make a new list in a long
time because he was moving to more permanent location. I believe that is resolved now. I'll contact him and ask him to get out a new version.

    Take care,

1.3 is the most recent... jerry isn't in fidonet any more and this is all we have... the script /should/ already be in the I-BINKD area since at least 2007... perhaps it should be hatched with the replace verb so that all connected systems will get it and those that didn't get it the first time around will get it this time around??

if you are in more than one FTN network, you'll run it for each other FTN nodelist with its own output file names... then include them like the others...

1.3 is the most recent... jerry isn't in fidonet any more and this is all we have...

I've had a thought about redoing such a utility using some Perl modules (especially one that can be used to read through a nodelist file) but haven't had the time to work on it.

the script /should/ already be in the I-BINKD area since at least

Is that how it was originally distributed?

perhaps it should be hatched with the replace verb so that all

Perhaps something I could look into doing...

    Hi Jame,

1.3 is the most recent... jerry isn't in fidonet any more and this is all we >> have...

I've had a thought about redoing such a utility using some Perl modules (especially one that can be used to read through a nodelist file) but haven't had the time to work on it.

the script /should/ already be in the I-BINKD area since at least
    2007...

Is that how it was originally distributed?

Not that I can find here. I have records going back to 1995 of all files ever hatched by the filebone, and later called the Filegate, and there is no record of BNLPL13.ZIP having been released.

perhaps it should be hatched with the replace verb so that all
connected systems will get it and those that didn't get it the first time
around will get it this time around??

Perhaps something I could look into doing...

    That would be great.

    Take care,
    Janis

since the script is copyrighted 2002, i must have picked it up from somewhere and placed it there on my system... sorry about the misinformation... still think it a good idea to distribute it so there's more places to grab it from when it goes into hiding ;)

It's ok, it's confusing, and yes, it's a good idea to get BNLPL13.ZIP out with replace. :)

BNLPL13.ZIP that I downloaded from your system carries this copyright:

    # @(#) binkd_nodelister.pl version 1.3 - 14 April 2007
    # @(#) Copyright (c) 2002, 2003, 2007 by Jerry Schwartz and Write by Night $version = "binkd_nodelister.pl version 1.3 - 14 April 2007";
    $copyright_notice = "Copyright (c) 2002, 2003, 2007 by Jerry Schwartz and Write by Night";

As I mentioned in a later message (hope you saw that one), the file I have had here in the PERLfdn's PERLSCR (perl scripts) carries this copyright:

    # @(#) binkd_nodelister.pl version 1.0 - 26 November 2002
    # @(#) Copyright (c) 2002 by Jerry Schwartz and Write by Night
    $version = "binkd_nodelister.pl version 1.0 - 26 November 2002"; $copyright_notice = "Copyright (c) 2002 by Jerry Schwartz and Write by Night";

So the one on your system is the later version. I sent that later one (BNLPL13.ZIP) to Jame, so he does have the later one that he can hatch out.

I'll leave it to Jame as to where the best place is to hatch the later version since we _did_ have a file echo, I-Nodelist/I-UTIL but that I-UTIL file echo has been removed from the filegate.zxx file (no files in years). Perlfdn's PERLSCR is still listed however.

    Take care,
    Janis

personally speaking, either one is fine by me but i think it is a good idea to distribute the script with the data file it creates... others might not carry PERLSCR but they do carry I-BINKD so it seems that it would be better off in I_BINKD... but as you say, it is jame's choice one way or the other ;)

Would you be so kind to send the FSXnet one over to me (nd fidonet
would be appreciated) I've been gunshy with the binkd.txt. I haven't
used the file for a while.

working ... better yet tech me how to run a perl script in windows and
how to roll my own and I'll never bother you for them again.

    Thanks

I sent a file (nlist.zip) via netmail to you at 1:2320/100. The file includes a
readme text file. Let me know if you have any questions.
