Plus, it'll give the NLP something else to moan about.

Is that because they were NC and there was nobody to remove them? :)

I even had somebody die on me during a connection ... weird when you realize you know the exact moment when somebody passed several countries away.

Plus the story of the Norwegian sysop who had died but there was money in his bank account and bills were auto paid ...

It took quite a long time to get the one, whose name we're not supposed to mention, removed after he passed.

I remember having a very pleasant phone conversation with Roy Witt about a week before he made his grand-departure. On the phone he seemed to be much different than his online persona...

Plus the story of the Norwegian sysop who had died but there was money in h bank account and bills were auto paid ...

The same thing happened to at least two other Sysops "here", BBS systems. It was interesting and amusing to access someone else's system not really knowing that everything was on auto-pilot.

The NLP is not necessarily by definition a negative entity, try looking at them as a resource instead of as the enemy.

You're right, the entity is a wonderful resource... for entertainment.

Lordy that's no good. How did you know they died? Did someone come on and say X won't be replying now or similar?

Person was terminal with cancer in a hospice with his Fido-machine with him.

There were like multiple connections with his system and while he was in his hospital room, the machine stayed on. When he blew his last breath hospital staff within a minute or two powered-down the PC ... The failure to establish a next session marked the moment.

golly, yes I can now understand how this led to certain knowledge of his status... I'm not sure as much as I like BBSing I'd want to have a system running FTN software humming alongside me as I lay dying though.

I have met several sysops and *Cs and never was disappointed, even when meeting people I fought heroic verbal battles with ... especially the Greeks.
Before retirement I traveled a lot for business and was able to link up with the RCs of most regions plus 8 ZCs ... whatever issue one had, it always automatically went away after a get together, breaking bread, sharing a beer...well, not with one ZC ... but in the end I met a lot of people, learned a lot and generally had a good time.

It's great you were able to weave travel with both work and hobby. It's always nice to experience new places and see some new and old faces along the way if you can.

I think the closest I may get to any of that is on a Zoom, Skype or Teams call with some fellow sysops... so not so much travel but at least some face to face chat without any keyboard text ambiguities :)

Come to think of it, it's not really something I have done much of at all since returning to the hobby circa 2012... most contacts tend to be helping others get set up and then moving on to the next person to help etc.

Sad smile, this one is listed for 2 weeks as another is trying to setup a node it seems. Waiting, but only a little. Not keeping them forever.
