• BBS Testing question

From Richard Vonzel@21:1/206 to All on Friday, April 21, 2023 11:20:54
Here's the dumb question of the month. How do you test your BBS setup to accept incoming calls from outside your home network? I can just just fine from within in, but how does everyone test it from outsidde it?

    Thanks,
    Richard

I take my laptop to somewhere that has free wifi and logon from there.

I've tested it by tethering to my phone and also logging in from work.

VPN, public wifi, or connecting from a shell account on the outside.

Use a network port scanner, like vert.synchro.net/scanmyports.ssjs

If you have access too it I would just use a cell phone with a hotspot. Then you are on another network.

A much more complicated way is to do some routing tricks with a hi end router or PFSense.

The best option is to ask the community to get someone to connect. You can almost always get someone on MRC to do it 24-7.

Whats the BBS I'll come try it out for ya.

I found a webpage with a telnet client embedded in it. That worked well
enough to make sure that a 'connection' could be established. The real answer is that I have a buddy who's addicted to Legend of the Red Dragon and wooing Violet, so I just told him that I had a 'beta' BBS up with LORD on it and
he's been connecting every day and lets me know when there are problems. :D
