Does the setup include the "starting out" options? I know 4.17 does, but the version I have does not (and I think mine is 4.08, not 4.07 after looking).

Not sure, where would I find that?
in between the
- General Game Setup
and
- Hand Weapon
there is
- Game Start-Up Settings
it allows you to give players default or modified items when they start playing. Like, instead of 200gp they can get 500gp. Or, instead of bare hands, you can give them a dagger, etc.
Ugh, I know your pain. I'm stubbornly trying to crack QuickBBS of all things. I setup RA because it was available but Quick was my BBS of the era. So I'd really like to use it. However no cracks, no keys, nothing
to be found... So I figured ah while not I'll give it a shot. At least there are depacks for most encryption/compression tools so you can get
the raw exe. The real trick is trying to figure out the logic of course. No luck yet but I'll keep poking away...maybe I'll get lucky :D
Well looks like I got lucky! I was poking around in IDA mapping out the
I think others have tried. I have 4.07 registered and it "appears" only some of the setup items are available with 4.17 that I noticed (I ran
4.17 for a while and it kept giving me CPU errors and locking up my Win
7 Virtual / Mystic BBS.

I might continue down my path of reversing the generation algorithm and maybe figure out how to write a proper keygen for it. I know I'm pretty close to the general gist of the code itself. Then perhaps I can give
The Pit a shot since I too, absolutely love the game. I even remember giving that RIP client a shot back in the day but ultimately prefer the ANSI honestly.
Is there really much difference between 4.07 and 4.17 anyway? I looked into it one time in the WHATSNEW and there was pretty much zero difference.
game play = no
game setup = yes (able to preset default starting equipment)
gaming = yes (4.17 has the cool EGA/VGA interface which makes the entire game SO different.)
Good to know. It would be nice to have a proper keygen for 4.17 considering the age of the game and the fact that the author has passed on.

I'm also rather certain that registered copies of the game were compiled independently and don't actually have any type of key file. Bummer.

Argh, that would make sense. I believe I tried to combine that
registered 4.07 into the newest release and found the same thing. Searched high and low for the key and didn't find it in a separate file.
I guess we need to find someone with a registered 4.17 and just have them share with the community. I pretty much just have a few doors for historical reasons only.

This is an old thread, but I'm currently looking for a REGISTERED copy
of The Pit 4.17 -- or 4.15 for that matter! Author passed away a while ago, and it doesn't seem like this game has ever been cracked?
