Hi All,

What is the best version of Binkd to use? The latest version I can find to download for Windows is Binkd 1.1a-27.

I've noticed that Deon is running binkd/1.1a-109 on Linux and Nick on Fidonet is running binkd/1.1a-99/Win32. Where can I find these newer versions?

I'm setting up a Telegard board and seem to be having a lot of issues trying
to get Binkd setup. I'm not sure if this version is just really buggy or
maybe I'm just mis-understanding how it should be setup.

I'm having issues with Binkd sending packets to the wrong hub, or mis-identifying my Fidonet hub as an fsxnet hub:

"tried to connect to 1:229/426@fsxnet but remote has no such AKA"

Even though it's listed as under the fidonet domain in my .cfg file:

look for binkd11a111* and grab one that works for you.

I would change those lines to all end in 1 eg.

I found myself trudging through some Russian language ftp sites before to
find the a27 version I ended up using. I had to scan it six was from Sunday before I felt comfortable using it through.

I read you comment about that before and I just questioned it since that was not my experience when I ran Max/Squish/BT on OS/2. Of course that was 20 odd years ago. Your squish seems to be working as a 5D tosser?

Mystic is the only tosser that I am aware of that uses a 5D outbound so that is something folks using it with Binkd would need to keep in mind.

Just out of curiosity can you post your domain ... lines that you are using with binkd?

Also your outbound directory structure for fidonet and fsxnet? In my Mystic setup fidonet in my default zone so I have outbound that looks like this..

/mystic/echomail/out
/mystic/echomail/fsxnet.015

I had always though that outbound directories in a 5D setup would not have the .???, .015 in the case of fsxnet. Do yours have them also.

It's not a very well known site. I go there because I can remember the URL. ;)

The github page is good too if you just want updated .exe's.

It's not an easy thing to find or navigate these days. I suppose I am lucky I run linux so I just cvs update and build. Everything I need is in the source directory. Today most folks probably git update but I haven't taken that step yet.

Thanks for your help before. I really appreciate it. I think I have almost everything working, with the exception of Fidonet where I can receive but not send.

I'm now running Binkd 1.1a-111 which seems to have solved that issue I had before with aka mismatches at my fidonet hub.

I've tried a few different mail tossers (GEcho, Fastecho & FMail) some work better than others. I think I settled on FMail.

If I write a message in Telegard, use FMail to toss the message into a .pkt file, then fire up binkd to send the message out it seems that any othernet
is reconized by binkd and will send the packets out, but not with fidonet.

In FMail I have Outgoing Mail set to: C:\tg\echomail\out

And now that directory looks like:

in
out
out.015
out.048
secure

If I toss messages to fsxNet or my Testnet the .pkt & .flo files are placed
in either out.015 or out.048 and binkd will happily send those packets out.

If I send a message in Fidonet, the .pkt & .flo files are placed in the out directory and binkd will seemly ignore them. I've tried renameing the out directory to out.1 (and even out.001) and editing the .flo file, but it
doesn't seem to help.

If I move the files over to c:\mystic\echomail\primary and edit the .flo
file, Mystic will send it out no problem, so it seems the packet is good.

I feel like I'm in the home strech, but just missing that one thing to make
it complete.

Here is what my binkd.cfg looks like:

That is actually going to be my backup option, since it's running on the same machine as Mystic I can run it as a point by just doing a file toss. (e.g. Mystic = 21:3/110 & Telegard = 21:3/110.1 and just have Mystic toss the messages to/from c:\tg\echomail\in|out\)

Do you have Fastecho toss the files into a place where Mystic's binkp can
send them?

I do. I have FastEcho toss to the Mystic echomail\in and \out directories,
and of course have FE set to look in the Telegard \msgs directory for the actual messages. There's a whole setup with a batch file or two for FE, and
of course the setup for FE itself, but the Mystic setup is super easy. I just have it scan the \mystic\echomail in & out directories for mail, and have the FE batch file create the semaphore Mystic needs to mail out when there's mail to send.

A little Frankenstein-ian, but I found it a lot easier to setup, run, and monitor than binkd command line, especially with its cfg file. Ugh.

Ah, I must have deleted the .ca off of that address when I deleted the password. It does read bbs.darkrealms.ca

Don't give up on binkd. It is the reference implemtation of the binkp protocol. It's not pretty to look at.. I just daemonize mine and read the logs. ;)

I read of your problem getting fido mail moving but couldn't see a reason for that but I am sure you are very close to having it done.

I don't think it is, but I also don't think that binkd cares. All three programs -- binkd, squish, and binkleyterm -- seem to be using the zone
number to handle the directory structure and seems to work fine that way.

Just out of curiosity can you post your domain ... lines that you are using with binkd?

I am actually using QWK for FSXnet on that board, but here is what it looks like otherwise:

E:\FIDO\OUT = fidonet
E:\FIDO\OUT.04d = scinet
E:\FIDO\OUT.26a = micronet

Now that structure already existed... either squish or binkleyterm created those. But binkd picks up mail from those directories and delivers it to
the proper nodes in the proper zones. I have a dial-in Z1 node that
interacts with BT and his mail moves out of here fine. Meanwhile, I have a Z618 node, as well as my other Z1 node and my Z77 node, that interact via
binkd and the mail moves to those nodes OK.

So they all work together.

I had always though that outbound directories in a 5D setup would not
have the .???, .015 in the case of fsxnet. Do yours have them also.

Yes, but they are all added to what I have set up in SQUISH.CFG as the
PRIMARY outbound:

; When not using 'ArcmailAttach', the Outbound keyword tells Squish where
; to find your Binkley-style outbound area. This should always be the
; name of your PRIMARY outbound area, without an extension. Squish
; will dynamically create outbound areas as necessary for other zones,
; so only the primary directory name is required.

Outbound E:\FIDO\OUT

So it uses the zone numbers and creates the \OUT.??? for all the other
zones. Telling binkd to use E:\\FIDO\\OUT ??? tells it to look in the
OUT.??? directories (apparently), and telling BT the following tells it to
do the same:

Hold E:\FIDO\OUT\

I don't know why but it all works, and I know if I tell binkd to use '1'
for every zone number, it will not work at all here.

Change the flow file from regular .flo to crash, 00e501aa.clo

Or, try this first.. add crash to the nodeline..

OK, as I suspected - its not an authenticated session, so your binkp want give packets to another end, because you have configured a password and the other end didnt use it.

I would start there... Whats the other end? What's in their log?

(Sometimes it is because there is a disagreement about the password :)

OMG, I figured it out & it was something so small...

In my binkd.cfg I had:

domain fidonet C:\TG\\echomail\\out 1
domain fsxnet C:\\TG\\echomail\\out 1
domain testnet C:\\TG\\echomail\\out 1

But what I failed to see was the second missing backslash after C:\ on the fidonet line. What tipped me off was I noticed binkd created a C:\TG\binkd\TG\echomail\out directory which I thought was odd.

I deleted that directory again, ran binkd and it re-created it. Went back
into binkd.cfg and went through it line-by-line and that's when I found that one missing backslash.

Deleted that directory once again, re-ran the poll to fidonet and BAM! it finally sent! I deleted everything that was in there first and sent another message from Telegard just so they didn't get 10 test messages all at once.

I'm setting up a Telegard board and seem to be having a lot of issues trying to get Binkd setup. I'm not sure if this version is just really buggy or maybe I'm just mis-understanding how it should be setup.

I use an old version 1.0a-483 from 2005 it works perfectly with no compatibility issues polling any version. The config file can be a bit confusing because people always forget that you have to use double slashs in all of paths .. thats usually the first problem that people are having. The rest of the config is pretty basic, most of the default options will suffice.

Even though it's listed as under the fidonet domain in my .cfg file:

You have the domain wrong .. it's trying to poll Nick with fsxnet domain

You dont need the domain name here. Remove it. it takes the domain from your domain setting. I poll Nick for Fidonet ,this is what I have for him.

node 1:229/275 bbs.darkrealms.ca <password> i C:\FileBox\Nick\

(the path at the end is so if I need to send something other than mail
packets, it will scan that folder and send all files that are in it, then delete them)
