• ANSI gallery

From Alpha@21:4/158.1 to All on Saturday, March 27, 2021 00:25:01
So I had this dream last night where I was browsing a gallery of ANSI
art, like a door program or something. But unlike a 'traditional' gallery program, there was a messaging system attached, so each piece of art had
a discussion thread that could be read/commented on contextually. And the
art and messages were all networked, like via and FTN base or something.
And there was so much activity and good vibes, because lots of BBSs were participating.

I woke up with that feeling, like, "wow, that would be cool!"

Then, in the shower: uh, maybe not. But maybe...?

I think the dream was influenced by a couple days on Discord art-related channels, where conversation and artwork live in the same stream. Which
    is pretty amazing.

So, at the risk of being told it's not really a good idea: would this be
cool as a networked BBS door? Also, I'm OK if this is a dumb dream idea.
Or maybe it's too niche, or it already exists? Quite possibly, it already exists. Or, tried and failed. Usually that's the case with my ideas, LOL.

Perhaps I'm also looking for a reason to create a scrollable ANSI art
interface and learn how to handle messaging :)

Or maybe I should just finish my DON'T SHIT YOU PANTS game.

    Cheers,

I'm not aware something like that exactly exists but I think it's a nice idea.

If you ever develop something like that and want some assistance with the
echos and/or data channels to be created in fsxNet to help support that let
    me know.

What appeals to me personally about the idea is shared echomail chatter but
in that context of being able to see/comment on the ANSI art as you mention. Nice idea.

Thanks, Paul. Much appreciated. Was thinking it could be achieved via a data sub over FTN. Going to do some technical discovery :)

Having a way to retain context--essentially allow the user to view (or re-view) the art from anywhere in the thread/comments--would make it
    super useful as well?

if you could get 80 column ansis to display correctly, this sounds like a good use for the extra columns on the right in 132 column mode.. would likely just have to 'draw' / re-render them in memory so stuff like lines wrapping at the 80th column, etc are already done beforehand.

Yeah! That was pretty much my thought as well: essentially it's like a
panel system for larger terminals. I'm working in Go, and there's actually
some decent console/term libraries for display -- I've already written
the ANSI display parts in a previous door -- just need to test the
wrapping ability. I started a quick-and-dirty little proof of concept door
to test the layout... Will post soon, would love to get feedback!

Your idea sounds like a BBS version of pouet.net website. I think it's pretty good. The UI is definitely going to be a big part of it.
