• BBSing and hobbies in general

I really like that the BBS community is still around (even if it's not nearly as big as it used to be in the early 90s). I enjoy the hobby of running a BBS, and my BBS has also given me programming projects to work on when I've had ideas for mods & doors & things (I've written some in JavaScript for Synchronet).

Also, since I have my BBS computer running all the time, I also have Plex Media Server running on the same PC, so my media is available all the time. A few months ago, I bought a much larger hard drive for that PC, and lately I've been ripping a few more of the movies I have on blu-ray for my Plex media server. I think it's pretty cool that things like Plex Media Server are available.. We can have our own straeming media library at home with it. Also, if you have the paid "Plex Pass", Plex can also use a TV tuner to stream your local TV channels to your devices (even when you're outside the home) and record the TV content via DVR if you want.

A couple other hobbies I have are music (I like to play guitar and keyboard/synthesizer) and sometimes photography. I haven't done those in a little while, and I keep thinking I should do those more.

I moved to Emby after years of using Plex.

Why? Native support for m3us and better recording.

Lastly, all this newer crap Plex is shoving down everyones throat. I had enough.

I'm not familiar with m3us. Also, what do you mean by better recording? Better DVR?

What stuff? I hadn't noticed that.

An M3U in my experience is simply a playlist of mp3 files. Its a simple ascii format.

Oh, yeah, I actually am familiar with that. When I saw it as "m3us" it didn't register to me at first. I have some playlists I've made in that format. Yeah, I've found it a little frustrating that Plex doesn't work with M3U playlists.

Allows you to bring in IPTV natively.

Forgot to add. Hiw ablut searching your local library and they now give you listings and suggestions to buy it from other services.

They also collect infirmation from their users.

Lastly, you cant even access your local plex server if Internet gies dowm apparently.

    Plex was great.....

You and me both, although I have been a bit more active then inactive in recent years with family and covid stuff going on it's nice to play with BBSing and chat with people when I have time.

I really like having conversations with folks and also helping get them into or back into BBSing so they can play and have fun with the software etc.

I've found the few interests I have tend to dominate my time when my passion to work on them bubbles up. Family also keep me busy and then there's work too :) A necessary evil I guess - ha!

Ah, I have seen that. But it's not something I'd call garbage, and I never felt like they were shoving it down our throat. They aren't forcing us to watch it. I actually think it's good to have some options for free streaming content.. I'm not going to complain about that. I've atucally watched some of the shows they have a couple times.

    Hallo niter3,

I moved to Emby after years of using Plex.

I did the same some years ago, I even bought a Plex lifetime pass...

Why? Native support for m3us and better recording.

My reason was that I didn't want to depend on their servers to be able
to access my own server. (And thus, they can look at my data, which I
    don't like)
Using Emby, I really have a self-hosted solution.

I did not know of Jellyfin back when I switched; I might have switched
there instead of Emby, as Jellyfin is the free fork of Emby.

For watching/recording live TV, I have tvheadend installed, but I
don't really use it anymore as I hardly ever watch live TV nowadays...

    Regards,
    Anna
