• Gallbladder surgery

From esc@21:4/173 to All on Saturday, February 04, 2023 09:05:55
Hey friends, just had a nasty gallbladder attack and ultrasound revealed some large gallstones. Was able to get scheduled for surgery the following day and have my gallbladder removed. This hurts! They have to go through the abdominal wall...going through all that muscle results in some soreness.

Anyone else have this done? Any pro-tips?

I've heard that debugging old DOS programs helps keep you distracted.

Or maybe the pain of trying to figure out really old code is what
    keeps you distracted?

If I caused a chuckle, I hope it wasn't painful. I hope your
    recovery goes well.

    Take care,

I had it done. If its arthroscopy surgery it's not that bad. You'll have some pain for a couple of days but they give you good pain meds. You'll be glad its removed. Those gallbladder attacks can get pretty bad.

    Good Luck!

Just take it easy after your surgery and you'll be fine.

Thanks, yeah, I'm in recovery now so just relaxing. It hurts trying to take a deep breath which is the most annoying thing! And for some reason I got the hiccups today which was the worst lol. But it's not terrible and I agree the meds are great :)

Never had my gallbladder removed but had my Sigmoid colon removed. They went right through my abdominal wall right down the middle and around my belly button.. You have to make sure you do NO HEAVY lifting for a few months, I did and ended up with a surgical hernia. My surgeon gave me a wrap to wear sort of like a girdle I wore that for about a month or 2. It helped to keep my stomach compressed and allowed me to not have the excessive soreness from having the surgery.. Good luck and hope you are on the mend..

I had mine out in September laparoscopically. I was lucky enough to have no real pain at all, I was given a prescription for Hydromorphone HCL which I didn't end up needing, I just used Advil+ instead (Ibuprofen + Acetaminophen).

The surgical wounds kind of felt more like cat scratches, which is when I knew it was time to take another Advil, after about three or four days I didn't even need those anymore. I was told no heavy lifting for at least two weeks which got me out of kitty litter duty! ;)

Now everything seems to be back to normal & most importantly I can eat bacon again. I do have four small scars on my abdomen which are still red even ~five months later, I was told they can take about a year to fully heal.

Sorry to hear you've been unwell, good they have found the problem and can fix things. I have a family relative who has had this surgery, from what I can recall it went smoothly and the impact on health has been positive without many repercussions on how daily life is lived.

Your experience was similar to mine. I was home and back on the computer an hour after surgery. In fact, I remember it taking longer to check in and prep then the surgery took. They shaved a small patch on my side. I remember recovery taking about 4 days, only used Advil as well, and mainly before bed since I sleep on my side.

After 3 years the laproscopy scars are pretty much invisible. With that being said, you will process food quite a bit different without the bile being readily available. Heavy oil-laden foods will slide through your digestive tract. I have trouble with french fries, pizza with oily pepperoni, some beef dishes.

My wife had quite a different experience as hers had burst in the hospital, and she was in the hospital for a week and had to have a drain installed. Generally the faster they catch it, the easier time you'll have with recovery.

Nice. I feel much better today (48hr post op) than I did yesterday, I suspect I healed a lot during sleep last night. I've been taking the narcs but don't think I need them today. I still think I'm going to work from home for the next few days just in case I wind up in pain and need to take a pain med.

I notice that there is one area near where they cut right by my solar plexus which appears to be very swollen. How long did it take for your swelling to go down? It makes it a bit tough to take a deep breath and I constantly feel out of breath if that makes sense.

I actually feel rather well today, 48hrs post op. Check in and prep for me was miserable because they said no food or water or anything and my surgery was scheduled for 5pm... I was so thirsty lol. Kept washing my mouth out with water all day. And I had a bunch of meetings where I had to do a lot of talking which was miserable.

Yikes. Yeah, I was in the ER with horrible pain and they sent me to a surgeon and we got the surgery scheduled for two days later. All in all a quick process for me for which I'm grateful. Sorry about your wife's experience, that sounds rough.

I was in the middle of a desktop refresh project at all of our sites when I got the last minute notice that they had an opening for the next week. I had to put a pause on that after the procedure for a few weeks as I wasn't able to lug all the new PCs from site-to-site.

I notice that there is one area near where they cut right by my solar plexus which appears to be very swollen. How long did it take for your swelling to go down?

I didn't really notice a lot of swelling on mine, though the one on my upper-right abdomen does still get itchy from time-to-time.

It makes it a bit tough to take a deep breath and I constantly feel out es> of breath if that makes sense.

The surgeon sent me home with two prescriptions. The hydromorphene and a laxative. I didn't take the laxative until the next day. What I forgot was that they filled my abdomen with co2 to do the procedure. The laxative certainly helped that co2... uhm, escape. After that I felt less bloated and felt like I could take deeper breaths.

Good to hear about the scars. I've already noticed the differences in processing food. I picked up a bottle of "digestive enzymes" which do seem to help after a heavy or fatty meal.

We went out last night to celibate the other half's birthday to an Indian restaurant which was about an hour away from home. Lots of heavy/fatty foods to be found there, but I brought one of those digestive enzymes with me and took it just before the meal, and thankfully everything turned out ok.

I'm using this brand that I can find at Wal-Mart, not sure if the same brand would be available in your area:

Webber Naturals Digestive Enzymes (90 Tablets), $7.47
    https://bbs.lc/nzh02

And is this following a doctor's guidance?

I can't remember where I first heard about these, but it was around the time when I started getting the gallbladder attacks about two years ago (then covid threw a monkey wrench into everything cancelling/delaying "elective" surgeries). So it might have been from the doctor or maybe my Mom who had her gallbladder out a few years ago.

My surgeon said that one of the goals of this procedure was to get me on my traditional diet with minimal speedbumps along the way. He didn't suggest making any dietary changes, but who knows.

The surgeon mentioned that I may have some "trouble" with fattier foods, and she is right, but nothing extreme. The digestive enzymes seem to help in the department.

Pick up the "girdle" as I call it, and it will keep you tight. My surgeon told me to use it to keep the incision tight so it would heal, I used it for a couple of months! Anyone else have this done? Any pro-tips?
My sister just had her gallbladder removed and she was very sore around her belly and the incisions. She said the only thing to do was give it time. Time was the only thing that helped it. That and make sure you keep a pillow nearby so that if you need to cough, make sure you are clutching the pillow to your chest! Especially if you end up having a coughing fit. You can easily tear the inside work up and cause extreme pain!

Hope yout recovery goes well friend. You know where to find us!

Thanks, and thanks for the tips as well. I had a hiccup fit and it was awful lol. People don't realize how integral the core is to everyday stuff :P
