• Typhoons in New Zealand

From Adept@21:2/108 to All on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 14:03:00
I don't have a clear idea on where everyone lives or where the storms hit, but hopefully no one was particularly affected by the storm that hit New Zealand.

I'm still finding it odd, because I view New Zealand as being more Antarctic-impacted than tropical-storm-impacted.

Replying to myself, but it was a cyclone, not a typhoon.

Obviously, the difference between a hurricane, cyclone, and typhoon is entirely about where one is, rather than what the storm is doing. But, still, I'd prefer to use the correct term.

Hopefully everyone is fine. There are many users in here, that are from NZ. Avon for example.

Think of a cylone heading north and hitting the southerpart of the USA.

Now just reverse that and think of a cyclone heading south and slamming
into Norfolk Island, and then making a bee line for New Zeland.

The same thing is about, being lots of water and a huge area for it to
    cover before hitting land....

North Island impacted, northland and east cost of the island. About 5 dead so far likely more to come, 150k without power but that's being restored, communications are poor in some areas and roading badly impacted also.

I'm fortunate I'm well away from it but the TV pictures look grim.

See, this is where I got mixed up -- I thought New Zealand started about as far south as, oh, New York is, north, if not closer to the pole.

But it's more like starting at North Carolina and going to Maine.

And, yeah, while New York is getting into the, "it turns into a post-tropical storm up there" zone, North Carolina gets hit by hurricanes often enough, even if it's not Florida.

But the south pacific / south Indian ocean area is... vast.

I'm glad -- I was kind of wondering if it was going to be impacting a flight of yours, too, though obviously that pales in comparison to the death and destruction for those living in the areas.

(and, obviously, not glad for all the people more-directly affected. Pretty awful for them.)

That's why it built up so much steam... Nothing but water. I saw a news
report that at one point the water was at peoples ankles, and within 10
miutes it was at the house roof. They had very little time to save
    anything...

Yep I agree, I was also rather selfishly wondering about flights also, which were not impacted thankfully. I made it to my parents place today, two flights later, without incident... but if I had tried the same thing a couple of days earlier I would have not got off the ground.

I can see some downed trees here and some minor flood damage but nothing compared to the east cost of the North Island. I am over on the west coast which was largely spared the worst of the flooding etc.
