From apam@21:1/182.1 to All on Friday, October 22, 2021 15:58:00
    Hi

I pushed some new commits today, some bugs in the new strings stuff
sorted (regarding octal and hex escape codes not working) and added the
ability to embed a command to display a gfile.

    example:

    msgid "LOGIN: "
    msgstr "@gfile:somegfile@\r\nLOGIN: "

will display a gfile, then line break then login:

I've also added a new config variable to file areas, in addition to upload_sec_level and download_sec_level there is now a visible_sec_level.

By default it will be the same as whatever you've set download_sec_level
to. However, now you can make areas visible, so users can list them,
however they can't tag files (and therefore download them).

Also, Alpha reports the postie is still playing up on some packets. If
you find postie wont run due to a pid file, there should be a
corresponding postie-XXX in the temp directory. If you could, please zip
up this entire folder and send it to me. Hopefully it will give me the
clues I need to hunt down this bug.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Just FYI, if the "at-code" in this message was filtered out in your

    BTW -- it works FANTASTIC.

Thanks for that, it's filtered now so only gfiles displayed from format
    strings will be displayed..

Was actually a bit of a security issue if you had gfiles you didn't want certain levels to see, they could type @gfile:somegfile@ and have it
    display...

    oops

He's done a really good job at customizing his bbs, I think you'll agree.

The login matrix is very cool (I'm still not 100% sure how he did that
haha, particularly the disconnect part) The new user signup looks good
too, and the other art elsewhere all looks good.

I always get a kick out of seeing what people come up with. Talisman's
still pretty restrictive on the customization front, so it's especially
cool seeing the creativity people have to bend it to their will.

    Thanks, apam! And paulie, too.

I'm really a hacker and 90% of the time I just stumble on the right way
of doing things through sheer trial and error and force of will, ha. I've
got a bit of a lua bug right now.

For those who use mystic, it's basically Talisman's MPL. And it's
embedded lua, already a versatile scripting language that's been around
for a while. Already it powers many cool things in Talisman -- like
inter-bbs one-liners, automessage, rumors. Don't like something? Jump
into the script and change it!

For other Talisman sysops out there, I'm going to start a luascript
download area on AlphaComplex this weekend, I'll post my NEWUSER.LUA
there if anyone wants to take a look. And any others I'm working on.

Talisman is truly a wonderful piece of software, even better because of
the care of its creator -- you!

    Cheers,

I've managed to get it up running and it looks good. I just have to figure
out how to get it to exchange mail with its uplink. Fails constantly.

What's your uplink running? We had some issues talking to binkit that we
sorted out, I can't remember if that was in the most recent release or
    not.

Binki is still very new, so there's bound to be more bugs to find :)

I'm currently my own uplink. Talisman would gets its mail from a Mystic sys
    on a Pi.

I couldnt get Binkd to connect because of some security issue, but Binki
seems to connect but no mail exchange takes place. Probably a config issue
with a TOML, that I haven't found yet.

binki stores a log file in your logs directory, does that shed any light
    on things?

This is all sent by the mystic side, it's saying that mystic has no files to send. Are you sure the mystic side is configured correctly?

It's very true. Mystic had nothing to send. Much of the Talisman message
system seems to work internally ok. Packets still don't go out to Mystic, though messages are on the BBS. I've played with it a few days and although
it seems the message area configs are in order, and Mystic sends packets now, nothing is imported. As time permits, we'll try again. My TOML files may
    still be screwed up.
