• fsxNet Feedback (File Areas)

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Sunday, June 06, 2021 15:47:57
    Hi all.

The comments that came back from the recent survey had this to say.

    [snip]

    File Bases / Distribution
    =========================

FDN for gaming related files (+1 agree)

File area for BBS themes (menus, ANSI, ascii etc.)

    [snip]

I'd like to kick off a thread to consolidate what (if any) additional file bases we would like to see in fsxNet, and then work to set things up.

Seems like something for gaming and another for BBS theme related stuff would be / is desired? Perhaps Ham radio related stuff too?

For games related stuff, should we have one base or several, are many needed
    or wanted?

Feel free to share any thoughts or suggestions and let's see where we end up.

As always, thanks for your contributions.

    Best, Paul

That might be nice. I have thought about doing themes but I haven't been able to get started.

I think different areas for different games would be best. That way operators can pick and choose what they want. It's better for file browsers also if they want files for a certain game they don't have to wade through a bunch of other stuff.

I think I might have been +1, but I'm not so sure now.. if it were fsxnet members own creations then yeah, but if it were just redistributing files
that are easily obtained elsewhere, than I kind of think what's the point.

File area for BBS themes (menus, ANSI, ascii etc.)

This to my mind should be a part of FSX_ARTS, I don't think there needs
to be a distinction between art packs and bbs themes.

Having said that, I would like to see more creations by fsxnet members
that are able to be passed around, but of course, that hinges on are we creating stuff... At present the file areas are pretty limited to BBS
software + images and text files, but there's no place for other
creations people may like to share...

I'd love to see modern 'Demos' people making their own games, either for computers or fantasy computers (like pico-8 etc) or just general stuff
    people might like to share.

Of course, if no ones making anything it's kind of pointless.

Yes it may be a bit chicken and egg this one, if there's demand for it I can create it, else the risk is an empty file area.

I'm not really across files or what is being done elsewhere to know how much this is needed or even if the base ended up being created, what would be new vs from elsewhere. Hmm. I'd say for a lot of older stuff it may be sorta useful/retro to have those files and mods on tap in the network. I guess it comes down to who wants what and if there's a demand for it. If it's not overly hard to do I can't see much harm in doing it. But it needs people into a specific topic to help drive/populate it.

I'd be interested in looking at those types of files if they happen although I don't have the artistic flair to create that kind of content myself. I think there are some here about that do.. :)

There is a package for Synchronet that looks like Mystic. I see a lot of potential in themes, wish I had the stuff to do my own.

I have a bunch of stuff that would fit into areas like this.

FSX_DOOM Maps and engines for DOOM and DOOM][
    FSX_QUAKE Maps/Mods/Engines for Quake
    FSX_QUAKE2 Maps/Mods/Engines for Quake 2
    FSX_QUAKE3 Maps/Mods/Engines for Quake 3
FSX_UNREAL Maps for the Unreal series

You can put those files in one area but that can be frustrating for file seekers and they will simply go elsewhere.

Agreed, it would be best to split stuff out. Shall we start with these bases and just work from there? If you files you are happy to share with the wider community I can work with you to get hatching access for the new file echos
and we can get started :)

There does not seem to be too much further feedback on all things files so unless anyone else has anything to say further I'll box on get stuff set up.

Yes, over a period of time these areas will fill up, so.. :)

Yes, if you are happy with how that is progressing.

Just so you know, I will start with freeware/opensource engines and the needed data for those games. Folks will need the original data for those games. It is copywritten so we will not be getting involved in that but free mods and maps that folks have created will be arriving as we move along.

Yes, I have been looking for feed back from others but haven't seen much,

I know there are a few gamers among us, and a couple game servers I have seen and played on a couple. I won't be running any servers myself but I would play them and I could get needed files about, if/when that happens.

I hope that sort of thing will happen. Just have to get started and see where things go.

all good, thanks Al. I'll work on setting things up and request the other
HUBs set up as well. Will be in touch when ready.
