Good question. I'll keep that in mind when I ask the R20 sysops for advice about how I'll cast my vote.

Maybe RC17 (Black Hole Bob) can shred some light about this nomination?

The "real RJ"? I only know one Jame Clay and that message was from him.

But the question remains why he used your system for posting this message

For you maybe. I sometimes have posted from other systems. Should my remote posts be automatically doubted?

I'm sure that if RJ thinks that it is important enough to bother with he will respond.

EOT as far as I am concerned.

I know all of the candidates, so I don't have to ask them about their dedication to the FTN.

I think those who do not understand how the FTSC works would better ask the question to the rest of the candidates, rather then questioning the Election Coordinator.

Alas, the political game goes on as usual every year, and it's detrimental to our network for sure... :(

Because I had to completely reinstall (from old backups) my fidonet nodes on completely new systems but while the hub operations are mostly working again on
my 1:120/544 node, many other things are not. (My 1:120/546 node is reinstalled again on another system but not yet fully operational, & my 1:120/545 node was back up briefly but its host systemm had a hardware failure.) And it's not helped not being able to work on it very often, nor that it's not the only thing I need to work on...

Can't you post from you own system?

That'd certianly be nice. If I can't make progress otherwise, I'll likely try posting from the command line.

How do we even know this is written by RJ Clay in person?

Would posting to a remote bbs (which even my own systems are, effectively) even be considered as "in person"?

In any case, Janis should be able to attest regarding who I am, as she is the one who reminded me via email of what's going on and who hosts this bbs that'd I'm posting on (& where I've maintained a backup login account for a very long time...).

I'm wondering why you wrote this on someone elses bbs?

Because I had to completely reinstall (from old backups) my fidonet nodes on completely new systems but while the hub operations are mostly working again on my 1:120/544 node, many other things are not. (My 1:120/546 node is reinstalled again on another system but not yet fully operational, & my
1:120/545 node was back up briefly but its host systemm had a hardware failure.) And it's not helped not being able to work on it very often, nor
that it's not the only thing I need to work on...

No biggie. When I was in Japan, a lot of my posts came out from Dale Shipp as he was file attaching QWK packets to me at sea and I was file attaching my returns back to him via email.

It was well known I couldnt access the ZCC traffic while at sea but that I could be netmailed via Dale at need and Bob could divert netmail to Dale if it was something critical.

Sometimes, you do what you need to for a situation.

Dale if it was something critical.

Hmmmm ... so you are saying that your netmail was monitored by a 3rd party?

No, only that it was in transit with a trusted party, same as any other routed message. Anything really private was emailed to my shipboard account (after maybe routing a netmail to ask what that was if they didnt have it)..

The diversion by Bob was automatic routing if I remembered to tell him I was underway. If I forgot, it sat there pending on his end until I got in port again.

Most stuff waited for me to get back in port but if a person changed phone numbers and needed an update or something like that, it routed through Dale to me in a BW packet (also does netmail) and sent automated via email to my ship account, then copied to floppy and read on my laptop while underway. 'BeeBopping to the Beat of the Bream' was my signature line when underway.

There were occasional netmail CC's to Bob to ask the netmail be passed on and that is all that was meant.

Some of this goes back 17 years now so no real details recalled on any actual netmails other than a few lively ones from Barry (Z3 and predated me in Z6 as a substantial feed site there).

Yes, times have changed and today you'd not be amazed to see that. Back then though, it really did confuse folks. ZC's took it in stride but some others got actually miffed that I was using non-standard ways when at sea to handle things, including ZONEDIFFs. I had no way to automate them weekly unless I made no changes at sea and at sea I had no 'file attach capability' so went low-tech and made segment changes at need then had Janis send them up. Strange yes, but it meant it didnt matter if I was at sea or not, changes were not delayed over it. I recall distinctly being at sea when Z6 said yes, standardize the phone if ION to the static (no deviation) 0 set. We had too many close ties to Z3 to even think of not giving them something they could use as a known, undeviated block. Perfect? No. Heck of a lot closer than a hodge podge though.

Anyways, back to the topic of this place since that sort of thing isnt and never will be a 'standard'. It's more of a one-off bit of our Fido history one wouldn't expect but really happened.

Oh yes! He'd have been doing similar to what I did then. I can't tell you the details of how that works with subs but lets say his response factor would have been slower than mine due to connectivity issues.

This brings to mind a question for the candidates (not sure if i missed any answers or not due to the overflow, but will work it from this point).

Grin, yup. The only thing Vince says though is he knows the fellow was stationed on a sub and he got a reasonable reply rate. He doesnt even mention which Navy and would not have known any details.

    Allow me a good story.

At the same camp there was an officer on leave and he said "You're from Belgium? I was stationed there for a while at the military base with the American unit".

So I told him "So you were one of the guys servicing the US nuclear warheads stored there?"

Answer "I can neiher corfirm nor deny". So I told him "Well let me then confirm
that for you" and I pulled-up a map from Google Earth clearly showing the 20 bunkers".

    He was no amused.

S ok, I did a reasonable amount of work for the UK MOD and the US DOD so have fairly good idea. Still it is nice of the CO to allow private comms (one way or another) to get through bearing in mind laptops was not available at that time :)

what time can you spend on the FTSC?

As much as I can, like anyone else.

So why are you even running as candidate?

Because I was nominated and have always (since I joined back in the mid 90's) been interested in the documention that's behind what we do in Fidonet.

A lot of people are interested in the documentation (including me), that don't run as candidate. You must have some intention to do something with them as an FTSC member. The voters like to know what. And what did you do in your past term for the FTSC?
