Would reducing the backbone.na and merging some of the echoes into 1 might be one idea to simplify fidonet?

Nope, because many systems do not believe in "backbone.na" being some sort of central repository/authority of echoes.

Backboning is a thing from the past. Except for a tiny handful of systems in North America and one in Europe, nobody really gives a shite.

The problems are that we still need a common list of echo tags available to link to, and backbone.na mostly serves that purpose.

We have moderators who don't actively promote and contribute to their echoes
    - and a handful of moderators hanging on to many dead echoes.

The role of moderatorship has changed, as a feed cut is no longer an
    effective deterrent.

We have a list of echoes sorely in need of consolidation - I'd rather have a small handful of echoes with traffic than the current situation where I need to tell new sysops to go to the STATS echo to see which echoes are still alive.

But... anyone can start an echo and word-of-mouth gets it picked up almost instantly. Sometimes I don't need to announce it. Z1daily? Wilfred Van Wonderful and the rest of the suspender-ilk picked it up within minutes.

And why does it need to have an ".na" extension...

We have moderators who don't actively promote and contribute to their echoe - and a handful of moderators hanging on to many dead echoes.

Its very difficult to moderate an echo when so many systems are peering/meshing with each other now.

I agree on one thing, we don't need several Sysop or Linux echoes, in fact we could just have one big "chat" echo like Fsxnet does and likely have some good fun going on.
