    Hi there.

I'm really really impressed with all of this font and XBIN stuff. Did I read it right that there is actually iCE Color support too?

OMG, I think I've finally died and gone to text-dork heaven.

I need to check the PETSCii version.

Digital Man/Deus: you guys rule, this is so cool. How do you change the font? Like I see many different fonts. Is there a HOWTO or readme or something? :)

Also the avatars are freaking cute! I love your animal collection DigitalMan. Some really good stuff. The R2D2 close up in the star wars collection was really awesome for a second I thought it was freaking pixel art!

Question about the fonts - how does one make them?

Really glad I decided to check in. Holy moly!

    1 love

    Hi there.

I'm really really impressed with all of this font and XBIN stuff. Did I read it right that there is actually iCE Color support too?

XBin files support iCE (bright background colors) and SyncTERM supports them, so if the XBin viewer (e.g. ansiview) supports detecting the terminal support and sending the right sequences to enable/disable bright-background colors, then yeah, iCE colors are supported too. Though, with custom palettes, it's less needed really. Anyway, you can see example xbin's in their full glory here on Vertrauen in the external programs -> ANSI art viewer thing. Some of them look a lot better in 132x50 and other large console modes supported by SyncTERM.

OMG, I think I've finally died and gone to text-dork heaven.

Deuce is actually working on an even higher-res/more color thing called "sixel". If you connect to nix.synchro.net with SyncTERM v1.1b, you'll see his sixel art demo. Cool stuff with a lot of potential, yet still retro.

I need to check the PETSCii version.

Digital Man/Deus: you guys rule, this is so cool. How do you change the font? Like I see many different fonts. Is there a HOWTO or readme or something? :)

A SyncTERM user can choose their default font for each entry (BBS) in the "Directory" - nothing special needed on the BBS side so long as the font is already installed in the client-side. A Synchronet BBS can dynamically change/select fonts in the client and send new fonts as needed, so long as the client supports the necessary escape sequences (http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/src/conio/cterm.txt).

The Synchronet sysop just needs to edit their font.ini file: http://wiki.synchro.net/config:fonts.ini

You may notice when you connect to Vertrauen using SyncTERM that you'll see multiple fonts right away.

Also the avatars are freaking cute! I love your animal collection DigitalMan. Some really good stuff. The R2D2 close up in the star wars collection was really awesome for a second I thought it was freaking pixel art!

Thanks. That Star Wars collection took me some time - I'm no artist! :-)

Question about the fonts - how does one make them?

There are a few DOS/CGA font creation/editing programs, but getting them to run on modern OSes can be a challege. The file format is pretty standard (nothing new) and you can find font packs readily available: https://int10h.org/oldschool-pc-fonts/fontlist/

There are some font editors for Windows too (e.g. Bitmap Font Builder, Raster Font Editor, Universal Font Editor) - I had the best luck with Raster Font Editor, though I wasn't seriously designing a full font - just an animated little dude demo I made to experiment with "graphics" using fonts.

Really glad I decided to check in. Holy moly!

Yes, I'm glad you checked-in too! I can see from your YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/grymmjack) that you've kept your creative skills sharp. We could definitely use your artistic touch back in the BBS scene! :-)
