• Issue with SSH

From dlcomm to All on Friday, December 09, 2022 15:40:14
Has anyone else started experiencing issues with SSH connections? I am running version 3.18 on Linux and initially I was able to accept calls on port 2222 for ssh while maintaining a locked down port 22 for remote admin. I noticed a sharp drop in visitors to my site and some lists have even removed my BBS from their lists. In troubleshooting I find that connections on port 2222 want me to authenticate to the server first before then passing those credentials to the BBS in an attempt to login.

I don't recall changing anything but did recently increase my number of active ports to 24 from 4. I also have no idea when this stopped working but I have not seen external calls to the BBS for over a month so I have to assume that is in part because of this issue.

Has anyone else seen this or have any idea where to start troubleshooting? I do have the sshd for the OS locked to port 22 in the config files and when I run a status on the sbbs service, I do see the failed login attempts for port 2222.

    Thanks

Are you referring to a Synchronet SSH server (you didn't say)?

If yes, for the proper forums for Synchronet support questions, see https://wiki.synchro.net/howto:support

    Hi,

Yes, I am talking about the terminal server. Sorry if this is the wrong place but just like trying to troubleshoot this issue, I am pulling my hair out (not that I have any left) trying to figure out where to discuss this. I tried the gitlab section but can't sign up with my email address.... had to put a synchro.net email address which then means I can't verify, can't login with my github account and the issue I am having is not already posted.

I really appreciate all the hard work you have put into this product so if I could ask for a bit of assistance on how to report an issue or get community support. Just as back in the day of trying to get a BBS up and running (with no internet to help), I am sure this is one of those issues that is simple once you know what to look for and near impossible when you don't. ;)

Discuss in the Synchronet-related support forums on DOVE-Net, FidoNet, or USENET. You have access to them right here on this very BBS. You're close.

    1. github "issues" are for reporting bugs or making feature requests, not for asking support questions.
    2. if you have a user account here, then you already have a synchro.net email address.

I really appreciate all the hard work you have put into this product so if I could ask for a bit of assistance on how to report an issue or get community support.

From the wiki page I sent you the link to:

    Discussion Groups

There are a number of Synchronet-related discussion groups that are very active and you can anticipate a response quickly. They include (in order of preference/popularity):

DOVE-Net Synchronet Discussion, Synchronet Sysops, and Synchronet Programming
    USENET alt.bbs.synchronet
    FidoNet SYNCHRONET, SYNC_SYSOPS, and SYNC_PROGRAMMING

Yup, I'm sure. Patience and persistence is key. :-)

Cool. I haven't seen any questions posted by you in the support forums yet though. <shrug>
