Hey everybody!!

It's me, Jenn!!! I'm bacccckkkk! I had some problems with my server so I
was disconnected from this conference for awhile. But now I'm back and I
see you're discussing zigzags...? I never expected that HERE LOL it
but hey..

Just as a breif sum up of my guitar knowledge and experience for those
who don't remember me or never met me before...I basically just fell in
love with guitars about over a year ago, and since then I've been
wanting to get an electric. but I, being a student, find this real hard
since my dream guitar is an ibanez 7 string which gets prettty pricy...
anyway i joined this conference to hear bout guitars and chat with all
the whizes..

but since then i've gotten a 6 string acoutistic...pretty old but in
working condition - nice fret finishing and straight neck basically. I
have NO idea what so ever how to play...So any tips for the newbie? Or
any suggestions as to which web site(s) or book(s) i could check out? I
don't really have time to sit down with a teacher but with books/reading material or tapes I could work at my own pace and during any time...any suggestions are appreciated!!!

Hi Jenn, I'm somewhat of a "newbie" guitar player, I just picked up an accoustic 6 string about a year ago. Since then, I've gotten somewhat good by listening to oldies, classic rock (especially riff-based stuff like AC/DC and Foreigner), even some softer stuff. I don't have a clue about chords, but for some reason can play whatever sounds right. :)

I'm not taking lessons nor do I have tapes to teach me. I have a book called "Fun with Guitar" by Mel Bay but I think that reading a book isn't as fun as playing with other people. If you have friends that play guitar, just tag along
with them and hear them play. It helps to watch CMT or TNN (or whatever country
station you have). Watch VH1 as well, you'll get to see how the bands play, and
what the tricks are. I'm teaching myself LOTS of songs by just watching concerts on TV all night long. :)

Actually you should play the music you like. It should be fun, you know. Playing music you dislike will not be fun, I guess.

Straight neck? The neck should have a slight forward curve when under
tension, or what we called "relief." This allows room for the vibration of
the strings, which forms a curve at the extreme points of its movement. If your neck are straight, you will not get the action and hear some rattles
from the lower positions or those from the bass strings.

I have a Martin pamphlet which says when one holds down the bass string
at both the 1st and 12th fret together that there should be a clearance
of at least 1/64 of an inch at approximately midpoint over a fret.
