    I think it was Robert Fripp of King Crimson who got the slick idea of putting other sounds onto
    the Mellotron besides violin sounds, i.e., Frippertronics.

    I thought that was for his guitar, by hanging a long loop of tape

    Fripp's band, King Crimson has used the Mellotron fairly extensively,
    and that instrument may have given him the inspiration for
    'Frippertronics' (since both involve the use of tape loops).
    Aside from that however, they are unrelated. I believe that
    'Frippertronics' was done pretty much as you indicated - by running
    a long loop of tape across two tape decks to create a repeating
    backdrop of layered sound for him to solo over.

    That's my understanding of it, anyway. If anyone can clarify
    further, please do.
