From DOUGLAS MCHARG@1:10/345 to RICH LOCKYER on Thursday, March 22, 2001 01:28:18
    Hi Rich,

Hey! I just found this website that put me back
    into Fido. I'm back!

Gota a gig coming up on April 21st in a little
restaurant / pub doing the acoustic thing with
    Dave.

We've learned som e new songs and are up to
around 35 or so. Big change from fugitive, but
since it is just the two of us (3 when our bass
player sits in) the moeny is still good.

    Coming up here this spring?

Sounds like a fun change from the BS you often ran into with Fugitive.

Unfortunately no... work schedule has been nuts and I was barely able to grab 3
    days to go to Cabo.

Hey, Doug, glad to see you back! I just got back
in the group a few months ago myself, after being
    gone for like 5 years!

    I'm back!

    Good news, Doug. Welcome back.

I'm still doing it the old-fashioned way, by calling up one of the
few remaining BBSs here in Vancouver. Seems most of the regular
participants here have disappeared, though. In fact, all of the
music echoes are suffering from a serious lack of traffic. ;-(

Cool! Let me know if you ever get a gig here in Vancouver. ;-)

I've actually been working on an acoustic duet thing recently
myself with a female singer. It's in the formative stage at the
moment - just trying out a variety of material and styles right
now - but if it continues to click, we'll be making it a three-
piece in the near future. In the meantime, I'm keeping plenty busy
    with writing new songs.

Take care, Doug. Best of luck....

Cool. I see it on TV sometimes. You could
combine both hobbies with the right axe!

One new passion of mine is Middle Eastern hand
drumming. I want to combine the sounds of heavy
electric guitars with Middle Eastern percussion --
    could make interesting combination.

Me too. My band Fugitive died out at the end of
1999 after 13 years of great experiences. Best
band I have played in, and in some ways I wish I
was still doing that. Now, I have formed a duo
with the singer from Fugitive and I am playing
mostly 12 string. We are doing some Cat Stevens,
Crowded House, Elvis, Soul Asylum, etc. totally
about 35 songs so far. We've got a regular gig
every 3 months at a local restaurant / english
style pub and I am enjoying that. Actually, I
play there in two days (April 19).

So how have you been? Still doing the Medieval
thing? Still playing? Watcha doing for work?

I still have a cork board beside my computer
which has a pile of pictures of my fidonet
buddies and I look at it all the time. I've been
down to see Bill Riley a few times (and he came
up here last fall) and have met quite a few of
the guys in our west coast jam sessions. Even
Lee MacMillan flew out for one of them, and it
was great meeting all the guys. I try and stay
in touch with Tom Engle, Bill Riley, Rich
Lockyer, Dave Casey, Lee MacMillan, Stephen Jones
and a few others that I chatted with a lot.
Great bunch of guys. Write back and let me know
    how you've been!

    Good news, Doug. Welcome back.

Thanks Martin...glad to see you are still around
and doing well. The last time we chatted, you
had purchased a new guitar...still like it?

It's great that you are writing songs and playing
with others. It will help to keep you young (in
contrast to getting old quick by giving my
    daughter driving lessons).

I miss Fugitive and the music that we played.
Over the 13 years we got real tight and were one
of the top bands in the city. I don't miss
moving the gear or the late nights anymore
though. The duo thing has been working very well
and which is a good substitiute since I still get
the playing time, but without the other hassles
such as moving a lot of gear.

Great to chat with you again. Give me a shout if
you come over to the island, I would enjoy
meeting you sometime. I get over to Vancouver
periodically, but rarely have any free time since
I only go to solve work problems, then return.

I still chat to a lot of the guys including Sven
from Germany (I chat on the phone with him about
once or twice a month), so the old Fido group is
    still around.

Yep, still playing, but not in a band. Bought
myself a bunch of new gear, like a new multitrack,
digital delay, plus, of course, a new electric
(SG) and a bass. I'm moving into a bigger house
in a few weeks and have set aside part of the
basement to be a studio, so there will be lots of
room to play and set up equipment.

Yep, still doing the medieval things, as a matter
    of fact!

Wow, excellent. I've got a lot of that stuff set

    Hi Tom,
I've been all around the Salton Sea, and I can
believe it would be fun motorcycle country. It
was hot when I was there in November (about 15
    years ago).

Yeah I still have the Strat. I still think it is
one of the nicest looking Strats I have ever
seen. I also like playing it although I have not
done that much lately. I've been very busy with
the 12 string. Dave and I worked out another
original tune last Saturday. I'll see if I can
get a recording of it and send out a clip to you
guys. We're up to 4 originals that I think sound
    good.

    --Doug

I went on a 300 mile motorcycle ride today and
at one point we were out in
the desert around the the Salton Sea and it
    was just over 100 degrees.
    Definatly HOT!!!

You still have that old lamp shade
strat??? :) Im glad to hear that.

Isn't that the place that used to be a town, then flooded for some reason? I remember hearing of it, and even seeing a picture of a Texaco sign (one of the tall ones) sticking about 5 feet out of the water. (Mind you, the complete sign was probably 30' tall)

What was the deal with that place?

I've never seen anyone actually SWIM in it. They boat and waterski, though I think recreational usage has seriously dropped off over the past 5 years (which
is when it has really started to get nasty).

Did you ever check out the "Remember Shakti" recordings of John McLaughlin? That is real cool stuff, I think. One CD (the believer) came with a 25
    minutes
video clip (*.mov or something). That was way cool... it is very interesting
    to
see/hear what they can do with a tabla drum.

The Arabian druming is very interesting too...a ctually, the concept of the eastern music is pretty similar to modern jazz :))

Yes, it is. In Middle eastern drumming, you typically have a basic rhythm
    or pattern of rhythms
and it is up to the drummer to improvise and fill to make things more interesting. The problem
you run into is when *everyone* is trying to be the lead drummer and then everything falls apart
into a big pile of mush. Just like with any kind of music, if you are improvising, you still need
that good backbone to play around or you end up with something like that
    scene in Spinal Tap
when they are playing at that small amusement park without a lead
    guitarist...

Originally, a natural lake began to form in 1891... it dried up in a year. It started to form again in 1893.

Some genius decided that he was going to divert the Colorado through a series of canals to irrigate the Imperial Valley.

Problem was, he forgot that the Imperial valley was over almost 300 feet below seal level (current lake surface altitude is -200). Coupled with the river going into a flood stage, the ENTIRE river diverted and rapidly flooded the valley.
It has very little natural feed (runoff from the desert, including streams from
Mexico), and NO natural outlet, so evaporation constantly increases the salinity and levels of DDT, DDE, Selenium, and other bullshit.
