I was at Fort Irwin about 30 miles from the sprawling metropolis of Barstow. I'll be down that way again on the 9th of August for about a week. How far is it from you, might have to make room to throw a guitar in the back if it's close.

Bitterness, no. Disgust, yes. Those boys arms must be tired from patting themselves on the back. My dad hit the beach at Omaha on the 6th of June, 1944. His brother was at Army base near Hickham Field when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He won two Bronze Stars, one at Iye Shima and another one on Iwo Jima.

In all the years I knew both of them I never once heard them say look at what a
great job we did. Wish I could say the same for *any* Gulf Veteran I've met.

I know guys that got bronze stars for sitting on a transport waiting for a beach landing that never happened. I also know guys that spent the war watching video tapes except for the occasional scud alert. Definitley a different kind of war. The problem with the gulf is the military needed some good press after the godless red hordes going away. Unfortunately, many vets believe the BS the DOD has been spouting ever since. For the record, I hope I've never given the impression that I thought we were "all That". I know too many vets and studied too much history to see any correlation. I thought I was something of a history buff but I have to admit I've not heard of Iye Shima...

You're right, our military needed the "overwhelming victory". Desert Storm was a textbook excercise in feint and flank. But the Iraquis were out classed and out gunned. A young fella Riley and I know was going on about being a combat veteran and I doubt if he fired a round anywhere but on the range. Worse yet, he can't even play guitar!!

Hey, some question for you - what is the cost of any electric guitars in your countries? (Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Yamaha ets)

Well... depends on the model. In general, the guitars are significantly cheaper
in America than here in Germany. But that is also matter of the exchange rates.
Lst time I was in America, the US$ was much cheaper than nowadays. I guess, now, the guitar prices are not that great in America anymore. Canada might still be an interesting place for shopping guitars, though.

Anywhere from $150 for entry-level gear to over $3,000 for high-end Gibson and Fender Custom Shop models.

TYPICAL good-quality retail prices are between $600 and $1,000.

Unless you buy a G&L from Engle's Discount Guitar Emporium.

One of the best online shops for musical stuff (including lots of the famous guitar brands) for Germany can be found on www.musik-produktiv.de. They offer fair prices compared with the german price-levels which seem to me very high... The second-hand shops are a better source for good (and fairly cheap) instruments but you have to spend a lot of time if you're looking for something
special (it took me about 2 years, till i finally found my steinberger gm7t, but instead of last list price of US$ 3950 i only had to pay DM 2100 for a almost new one...). Second hand prices for older Yamaha's like the late eighties RGX series are around DM 700, Gibson starts at DM 1200, Fender US Strat (new) is around DM 1500... Ibanez ranges from DM 700 (S-270) up to DM 4500, EVH Wolfgang not under DM 3500 (new)

Fender Strat = 10,000 - 20,000 Pesos
Gibson Les Paul Standard = 40,000 - 60,000 Pesos
Ibanez = 60,000 - 70,000 Pesos
Yamaha = 10,000 - 15,000 Pesos

A good Fender over in Australia, genuine US ranges from $2000 (standard
Strats & Teles with not many bells & whistles) to $4000 ('62 re-issues of Jaguars and Jazzmasters); Gibsons tend to go for around $3300 or so I think for a decent LP and about $4000 for a good SG; Ibanez are usually pretty
cheap and I will never buy another, around $700 to $1500 for your common models; Maton Mastersound goes for $900 to $1200 depending on whether you
want a different paint job or something, but a very damn good guitar.. I will definately buy one someday; Yamaha I don't care about except the 1966
re-issue of the SGV series, which go for around $600 surprisingly; Rickenbacker are $6000 I think for the re-issues; Epiphones are around the $1000 mark; Jacksons are around $700 to $1500; ESP are $1000 to $2000;
Gibson Gothic series are $2000 or thereabouts;

all are is $AUS.

well.. the necks are too skinny for my hands - i require a fatter neck or i get "wanker's cramp" :).. and i don't like the sound of the pickups.. too "hot" or "cheap" sounding.. fair enough, you can work with them, but i'd
never buy another.. i'd buy either a weirdo cheap guitar or a strat or jaguar..
