I find it's the other way around, actually. At least when you're
doing the auditioning, you're the one(s) in control of the situation.
That doesn't make it easy, of course, ...just a tad less stressful. ;-)

...he's a guitarist but would consider a two guitar gig if it
looks like it'll work. Sounds promising so we'll be getting
together as soon as I get back from my trip next week. I sure
hope it works out, I'd really love to start playing out again!!

Yeah I'm not looking forward to it. I've found that my level of nervousness is directly proportional to how long it's been since I "played out". When I started sitting in with a blues band in Korea, I'd not played out
in over 10 years. I was so nervous my hands went numb. Needless to ay, it wasn't my finest hour... Even laying off for a few weeks means I'll be contending with a bout of stage fright for the first few songs.

We've not gotten together yet but it's looking promising. We did the initial "feeling out" over the phone and his background/direction and outlook are uncannily close to my own. At this point I'm thinking the biggest problem may be our styles will be too similar to make it interesting. Looking forward to finding out though.

I know exactly what you mean. I also went for about ten years
without performing live at one point. When I finally got back into
it, I went out and auditioned for an R&B band - mainly 'cause I knew a
couple of the guys and they needed a bass player. I figured it'd be a
fairly safe way to get back in the game because played in R&B bands
before, but I was nervous as hell and didn't play very well at all.
Still, I got the gig - probably 'cause they were desperate! ;-\

I figure thats how I got the gig as well. :) It's very strange. We had our biggest gig after playing steady for 6 months (opened for Warrant to an audience of 3-4 thousand) and I didn't bat an eye. Not 6 weeks later, I was sitting in a bar we used to play, having one last beer with the bass player the
night before shipping out and the owner asked us to wank a couple of songs. After not playing for 3 weeks the 10 people in the bar made me nervous As hell... Go figure.

That depends on the styles. I've played wit some guys who were 180 out from what I do and it just seemed to work and also with guys who played very similar and we just seemed to be out of sync.
