The whole concept is quite intriguing, but personally I just don't
have the technical facility to make good use of the extra string.
Six is plenty for me! ;-)

I don't think I could handle the extra width let alone the extra string.
This month's Guitar Player has a "shootout" on 7 string guitars from low
end to higher priced.

I got a 6-string bass about ten years ago and I thought that was
going to be a bit of a struggle at first. But it was really only a
matter of altering my left hand technique slightly. Actually *using*
the extra strings (one above and one below the normal 4-strings I was
familiar with) really took some getting used to. I soon decided to
retire my 4-string bass for a while until I got comfortable with the
new configuration. ;-)

Anyway, I can see using a 7-string guitar for styles such as jazz
and classical, but they seem kind of pointless for contemporary
rock/pop/whatever.
Lenny Breau had his 7-string electric made with an extra wide neck -
like a Spanish-style acoustic. He said it made it easier for him to
play different parts simultaneously and make sure that each note rang
clearly. But he was a unique player with quite specialized needs.
I just can't see the need for most players to have a 7-string guitar.

Agreed, I found basically the same thing. I was expecting to have
trouble with the width of the neck as I have fairly small hands but I
seem to manage pretty well. I do find that I use the B string a lot
more than the C though. What 6 did you buy?

Hell... I can't handle a Carvin 6-string neck. Most 5's are pushing it. I'd like a Jazz-bass style 5-string, which would probably have a neck about the size of a P-bass.

Oh come on, you can wrap your fingers three times around the neck of a Les Paul
and still make chords!
