Considering to take HAM-test

Hi.
I'm a 19 year old male, which is considering to get into amateur radio.
I don't have a decent reciever (yet). My radio is an old Tandberg Huldra 8. It has AM-modes, and can recieve from 510kHz to 23MHz, in AM. Therefore, I cannot listen to SSB-modulated transmission. I can listen to CW, though, but my morse-
skills aren't any good yet.
Therefore, I'm wondering what HAM's talk about on the air. Can anyone here tell
me?
The reason for asking is, that if it is interesting, I'll go ahead, take the tests, and so on.
I have visited an amateur-radio club in my hometown (Fredrikstad, in Norway), but they only meet twice a month. Also, it's much easier for me to ask here, since I usually forget what to ask about when I'm there. :)
