JOHN MAX GAVIN, of Little Rock, age 62, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at his favorite place in the world -- Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs. He was known to family and friends as Max, Dad and Grandpa, and to his Ham Radio buddies as W5 Old Duddy Fuddy (W5ODF).

Max was born in Anderson, Ind., the first of four children to Joseph and Margaret Gavin. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Anderson in 1955. He moved to Little Rock as a member of the U.S. Air Force. Max was a lifetime member of ARRL, American Radio Relay League, and he was active in the Central Arkansas Radio Emergency Network, or CAREN. For over 15 years, he served as co-chairperson of the Catholic High Juntique. He made lifetime friends everywhere he went.

Max was preceded in death by his brother, Dave. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Gloria Gavin; his brother, Neil Gavin of Anderson, Ind.; his sister, Nancy Shrewsberry of Pendleton, Ind.; six children; and 11 great-grandchildren.
His three sons are Michael Gavin of Branson, Mo., Phillip Gavin of North Little
Rock and Jeffrey Gavin of Arkadelphia; and his three daughters are Tammy Freeman of Clear Lake, Iowa, Michelle Murtha of Maumelle and Marion Gavin of Little Rock.

His family asks that memorials be made in his name to Catholic High School at
6300 Lee Avenue or to the CAREN Club in lieu of flowers.
