Who the heck sells kits these days?
I'm an old paint by numbers Heathkit guy ( Ann Arbor Mich Co.)
but I guess that dates me some.

Ramsey Electronics still sells kits.. Ten Tec sells kits, MFJ has some kits. There are a few other companies that have kits as well.. I just can't think of them off the top of my head.

The downside, is that with all the bells and whistles, and
whatever the kits are dieing, and my fellow hammies are buying
14000 dollar radios...which just blew me away when I saw them.
The downside with this is built-inside self destuct after so many years..and of course by then there is better radios. Also more
chances of them breaking down when they shouldn't...and then
...well the repair bills are outta this world.
I can no longer build kits....but Elecraft kits are really great....Ihave a K2
transceiver that was built from a kit...high-performance
They ain't cheap...but they are not only kits, but high-end,
ones
I totally agree with your there, Thom. I have built the K2, K1,
KX1 and XV144 (in that order) and can thoroughly recommend Elecraft
kits. Their web site at http://www.elecraft.com is certainly worth
looking at.

I liked the Heath Kits too ... we had a outlet here near Toronto
but they disappeared from here, which is still felt by myself and few others.

I have most of the rack mount audio units Heath put out in the 1980s,
and I built all but two of them (found those on eBay). I also have several other Heath units, including two televisions. FWIW, Heath was
in Benton Harbor, Michigan, with its factory in adjacent St Joseph, MI.

I liked them too ... I did like the SB401 and SB301 ... and I
hope one of these days, to get my friend to let me have them both up
here to get'em on the air again. Last time I had them to check
over my part of the building process, they were in 100% condition.
Since that time, they've been in their packing boxes and untouched
until he heard me on 40meters one day and surprised me.

I had the 303 with the 401. I liked the 303. dIdn't quite compete
with my old Hamarlund receiver, but few do. Also had a lot of fun with
a hw-100 and hw-12 transceivers back in the day.
Until my house fire after Katrina I was using an old heathkit phone
patch too, interfacing it with an Icom 740.

Unfortunately, with little cash in those days, and now asthe 303 was a decent unit, sounded good. I don't think there were many differences between it and the 301. IT had the 15 mhz bc band, at least the one I owned for awhile had that one. Got my 303/401 setup on a combination of a
medically retired, and other issues, I never got to see the 303, nor
the new toys of today.

Aaah the Hammarlunds ...saw and tried a dew of them, and found
them to be in some cases better then the new stuff. The HW-12 was
the main stay of many rigs for the white caners I helped out.

I see you have had your share of home disasters. Me too, but not
as much as you, as we dodged a twister, or a few of them, but we had
a house fire caused by a Zenith TV bursting into flames. Seems the
"bomb goes in before the name goes on" , so no more Zeniths for our
family < 2 bombs later>.

In fact, about that time I got rid of an old HEath hr-10 which kept
coming back to me over the years. I gave that radio to a friend and a
few years later when I had gotten completely out of anything radio a friend of mine gave it to me to listen to refresh myself on the code.

I resemble that last. That's where I first saw one was at the school
for the blind in IOwa. THey had a COllins m-2 as well, thanks to their proximity to the COllins plant in Cedar rapids Iowa.
The two were related. My xyl and I weren't allowed to return home
when we left the hospital after Katrina, we operated radios all week keeping the hospital in food water and diesel fuel as well as helped arrange a couple patient evacuations. the air force flew us to SAn Antonio and the authorities wouldn't let us back in until we had
equipment and paperwork together as emergency communicators. SInce I didn't have any working vhf/uhf gear except an old motorolla uhf
handheld we were awaiting two new rigs for those freqs at the local ham radio dealers. they were supposed to come in that next MOnday and we'd have the paperwork faxed to us then at the motel. wELl while waiting
we were contacted and told that when they turned on the power grid to
our neighborhood our damaged house went up in flames, but the old Rottweiler chained to the front porch survived. the good folks at
K-comm in SAn ANtone were trying to get KEnwood moving as quickly as possible to get those two dual-band portables to us quickly so we could get home, but other factors conspired against us.
I got the Icom back, it had been taken into the hospital as a backup
as the 746 pro they had there had just gone to the shop for warranty repair and just returned a few days before the storm. Along with it I kept my Heil mic and boom stand. These days primary rig is a KEnwood ts-440 and the companion phone patch, mc-50 desk mic and a beefy AStron supply I bought from the estate of a local ham. IN fact, the AStron
powers everything that needs 13.8 vdc around here when not on battery power.

Never had an HR10 ... maybe a good thing.Yah, it was their entry level receiver of its day.
Aaaah Rat-Shack ... I had the DX160 receiver... worked great atI had one of those too. I used it as a loaner for new prospective hams for years, finally gave it to a friend of mine who did a lot of my antenna climbing
home and on batterys. I sold it to a friend years ago, but wish I
had kept it as a loaner.

Puzzled??? " I resemble that last.." What white Caner... they
were donated to CNIB for them to use, and they got hams to sponsor
blind ops on the air. I still have a retired gent here I go over
to see when the bells ring for help.
Wow Richard, you and your wife really had a bummer of a time.
Glad to hear your dog survived. There was a show on the TV about
the pet rescues, and it was great to see pets and familys reunited.
Too bad about the house. Inside all the memorys of family, and
records etc ... that would have me in shock. Thats what I felt
after our fire here, but then it was a quick fireball event and the
fire was quickly put out, no loss of life, all pets saved, walls
standing and some stuff lost. BUT you lost all...
despite your losses, you and your wife helped others, and were
willing to get back in there and keep volunteering.

YEp, Im a blind man, white cane and all <grin>. A friend of mine had
the hw-12 at the school for a little while.
Yah, I"m really paranoid about data these days, since this old dos box doesn't have a cdrom drive or anything like that I email a zip file to
a friend of mine in IOwa of such things as my station logs and third
party traffic files about every three months I"m big on off site
storage these days. I lost research notes for a book I was writing as well as all the professional audio equipment.
That's part of why we get these frequencies to have fun with. AT
least here in the U.S. right in part 97, in 97.1 the first clause says that amateur radio is to provide "a trained pool of operators ... "

I put my foot in my mouth. Sorry about that. I used to live inNO prob there. I seem to recall hearing about a system cnib had where members could dial the telephone and operate the hf station as well as control it via phone line and touch tones.
Toronto, just south of the CNIB and I helped with a few antenna
partys over at homes of a white cane operator. He was a real
friend and I still hear him on out in Alberta sometimes.
Love your tagline Richard ....hope sometime in the wee hours maybeDUring the fall and winter months I hang out on the geratol net 3668 khz. I get
to hear you on 80meters? I am on 3755 LSb most mornings, as well
packet. Great meeting you!

IF you get on 20 meters I'm a regular net control for the nets that
meet there. Even when I'm not ncs I'm often monitoring, so give a call
on 14.3 and we'll move off and chew the rag.

Yes...Right on. I think the system still works for the CNIB
people and there was a ham "Rudy" who really used to get on there
and run it on 3755 most mornings.

Geratol net eh? 3668 okay will keep that in mind too for the
fall and winter. I need Geratol these days! Is that morning?

Ok on 14.3 will take a listen and sign in....I take it this is morning? I used to listen to 14.332 and the YL net tune-up but
folks I know on packet with YL@WW just seem to be on the packet. But
I will be there during my morning..yawns...and wake up exercise.
I know you are with ARES, and I wonder if during your experience
if you happen to hear this CERT or REACT stuff on FRS ch1. We were supposed to have a drill in our area with REACT and FRS on ch1 ...
but I heard nothing. Oh well I guess there isn't the interest as in
other areas. My friend and I and another CB operator here in this
place run a net like that for halloween patrols, We use Ham
2meters < 2 licenced hams> < FRS ops on CH1> and our CB friend on
ch 1 and ch 9 to try keep things safe, after a few years of
Halloween nastys... I think it paid off, and now I know there is a
plan for our region but we don't seem to hear from them, which is
strange.?
